Re: I can not BELIEVE IT!
I have learned not to fall for those! One thing big seminars Yes T Harve Ecker's Millionaire Mind and such do this, but this is what you have to know. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW YOU GROW, ONLY THAT YOU DO GROW! If you have yourself on a regular mastermind, and reading program, that works as effectively as any hypnotist would do! YOU ALONE MUST CONTROL YOUR MIND! Don't give in to any tactics that don't feel good no matter who is doing it. Now don't get me wrong, I have gotten a lot from many such programs, but I go in informed and I learn and I make my decisions based on my budget, not out of coercion.

Re: I can not BELIEVE IT!
My experience with both online and offline seminars is the same. They always bait you in with a FREE or attractive offer that is supposed to give you some value, and then they switch into HYPE mode to try and SELL and convince you that with out their "SUPER DUPER SYSTEM" or product (that usually costs thousands of dollars) you will be LOST on you're own if you don't buy it TODAY! Same ole...same ole" (LOL)

Re: I can not BELIEVE IT!
This pitch-like model is something I've seen everywhere. However, what level of pitching varies. What I too have found is when you go to an inexpensive event, there is more pitching and less value.
However, for those upscale/high value packed events (I don't like to use the word "expensive") you find less pitching. It's still there but it's okay because you know what you're going to get.
Thanks for sharing because this IS some very good awareness to have for those who are attracted to "free" or "cheap" events. Free is not always a good idea.

Re: I can not BELIEVE IT!
Well, I'm going to play devil's advocate here...
I've read a lot of complaints on here...UGH! They "lure" you in with a free offer than SELL you stuff.
Seriously?
Ok, First of all- that's "Attraction Marketing"- lead with free value.
If you want to run a non-profit and just provide tons of value and never sell a thing, then good for you. But I'm willing to bet that 99% of the people out there are looking to make MONEY. If you're giving away the farm for free, you aren't making money. Period.
Let's be honest here people, all of y'all are selling stuff, whether they be products or services. That's how online marketers make money. If you aren't selling, I'm going to bet that you're the person wondering why your bank account is empty...
The reason is simple- you aren't selling!
As for the "Pitch Fests"...
If you don't want the extra stuff, don't buy it! Why not take what valuable nuggets you do get for free or for a low cost and MOVE ON and don't complain. I'm willing to bet that after sitting somewhere for an hour or two or a day getting information for FREE from someone who knows one iota about what their topic is, that you probably learned at least one golden nugget that you can use.
Be grateful for that. You got that for free.
Better yet, if you are an alleged "marketer," and you want to make money like they do on stage, why don't you learn by deconstructing their process and adapt it to suit your business?
As for personal attention from gurus:
No "Guru" is going to hold YOU or anyone else by the hand. It's not profitable. Mastermind and get a few hours of their time and then implement it yourself. There is work on your part that must be done, no one is going to do it for you. This is the one thing about our industry (and the US as a whole for that matter) that drives me up the wall.... The Entitlement Attitude.
You aren't owed a darn thing people, especially for free. Go ahead and spend months to read mountains of books that the Gurus used to come up with their course OR pay a price to learn how they have interpreted this material to apply to your particular industry. It's your choice.
Sorry, but I see nothing wrong with selling from stage. If you can't keep your hand off your wallet when people sell from stage, you may want to consider seeking help with this compulsive behavior. No one can MAKE you buy anything. Don't blame people just for trying to make a living- or for, **gasp** marketing. That's what most people call themselves around here "marketers"- so perhaps people should be taking notes from these folks instead of complaining about them! ; )

Natasha
For a person as experienced as you it is not a problem. But for people who are going in to debt foolishly I may ad it is Sad. I have gone to seminars and paid for hotel airplane and tickets and I got what I paid for.
yes there was up-selling which was fine because we got way more value then we paid for. As with this event it was valuable. The part that upset me was the way they kept them up late and did different forms of hypnosis. To get them to buy their products. Which put people at a unfair advantage. Call it Marketing Call it what you will. They made a Ton of money. But there are somethings Most people refuse to do just to make money. Most people that are ethical do not use hypnosis to get you to buy. Free is always great that is how I market. But I will not hypnotize you to get you to buy even if it guaranteed a sale. Even if I believed with all my heart it was in your best interest. Are Marketing and Influencing just like HYPNOSIS? I do not think so. But I could be wrong I have been wrong before. So that is the question is Hypnotizing the crowd ok with you?

Re: I can not BELIEVE IT!
Hi Juanita!
Hmmmm..... so I guess I need to do a little more research on the "hypnosis" aspect. Are we talking watching a pocket watch go back and forth and making people do things against their will? If so, then yes, I think that's wrong.
On the other hand, if we're talking addressing "pain points" and using persuasive speech (as an attorney I use persuasive writing on a daily basis to advocate for my clients in court). I don't think there's anything wrong with that...as long as people are being honest about what they are selling and not promising outlandish, unsubstantiated results.
- Marketers use specific copywriting methods to increase sales...I think that's ok.
- Knowing your audience, what their fears, hopes, dreams, frustrations are and tailoring your sales message to that.... I think that's ok too.
- Certain colors evoke certain emotions with your prospects, tapping into that resource is ok by me too.
I could come up with more examples, but you get my point....All of these "could" be perceived as "mind games" but I see nothing wrong with them. So perhaps there is a fine line between the "hypnosis" that you are referring to and darn persuasive marketing.
You mention that you feel bad for people going into debt foolishly and buying into these products. Here's where we differ, I think....(don't want to put words in your mouth!)
I don't feel "bad" for those people at all. I believe that each person is responsible for his or her own actions and decisions 100%. Now unless you're telling me that the guy on stage did some funky voodoo forcing people against their will to buy products, I think these people are responsible for their own decisions. Most have a 30 day refund period, so once they are out of voodoo land, they can re-think their purchase.
Plus, I have yet to purchase a single thing in 5 years online that I didn't get my money's worth out of. (well, there was this one total scam product which was about spamming Craiglist for SEO purposes, and I got a refund and gave the author a piece of my mind...ha ha ha)
I always learned SOMETHING that helped me move forward, and these people buying the products will likely get a benefit from them too. If not, that's what refunds are for.
On a separate but related note...I used to feel "bad" for people and actually felt guilty sometimes for selling marketing products because I know that 80% of people won't do anything with them. The guilt grew if I knew that they didn't have a lot of money. But, something Mark Hoverson said at No Excuses I really changed my mindset- that is, that we need to give people information and let them do with it what they will. You move forward for the 2 people who WILL hit a home run, instead of quitting to save the 8 who won't do a darn thing.
With that theory in mind....if 10 people buy a $10,000 course and 2 of them are able to make a 6-figure or more income from the information in that course, then Yea, I think the guy should sell away. Again, so long as: 1) He's not forcing someone to do something against their will and 2) he has been honest about the product and the results that one can reasonably achieve from that product.
So, I guess that's my answer?!?
Great to **see** you Juanita! It's been too long!

Re: I can not BELIEVE IT!
WEll you are amazing. I knew I could count on you for a Reasonable Response. The Hypnosis is a sketchy word. To one man it is marketing, to another it is putting someone in a Hypnosis state and persuading them to buy something they do not need. To one person they look at the persons circumstance before letting them make a unwise purchase, kind of like you would do for someone you love. To another they could take 10,000 from a 50 year olds retirement fund knowing it was not a good fit for that person and say it is your fault you listened to me.
Well if it does not bother a person to do that who am I to judge.
So I warn Newbies Everywhere the people asking for 50,000 10,000 5000 2000 bucks and promising you it will work are the same people that will tell you it is your fault if it does not work. Buyer BEWARE!!
