Information Overload

Postby Eleonore Jeudy on Tue Oct 26, 2010 8:53 pm

While I enjoy growing my business on the Net, I at times lose focus because there's so much to update. I'm creating a routine that will allow me to maximize my time online. Does anyone have a regimen that helps them gain efficiency?

I hear ya, it is easy to get distracted online. I just posted this yesterday on another thread...

dothistoday wrote:Absolutely, I do.

I have a notebook with 5 folders labeled Monday-Friday. On the inside each folder I have written the tasks that I must complete EVERY WEEK on each of those days. For example...

Monday:
Blog Post on Business
Backlink about Business

Tuesday:
Blog Post on Product
Backlink about Product

Wednesday:
Call 5 Affiliate Marketers

etc...

Then, I have a loose "To Do" list that I can move from day to day for misc. things that come up...phone calls, team emails, etc. If I don't get my "backlink about business" done on Monday, I add it to my to do list so that I get it done on Tuesday (in addition to my regular Tuesday tasks.)

This keeps me dedicated to getting my ACTION tasks done - which is what has lead to the massive growth of my business.

Hello Eleonore,

The best way to avoid information overload is to focus and stay consistent. Choose 1-2 or 2-3 marketing methods that you like best and master it. Focus on money making activities and list down your tasks for the next day and do it as soon as you start your day. Dont play around with facebook, twitter or even checking your emails until you finish your task. If you are new, follow and plug in to a system and interact and connect with the people inside that community. Don't make that mistake to jump from one system to another or one marketing strategy to another. Take it bit by bit because remember, you can't eat an elephant all at once. Hope this helps =)

Thank you all for your advice. I especially like that you put tasks in writing and many of you focused on taking action. Actions produce results. Thanks again for the boost.

Hi Eleanore, my advice, absorb it all like a sponge. But know that you can't do it all at once. You will need to filter through the information and find the things that work for you. Try different things at different times. It keeps things exciting. :)

Hi Eleonore,
First of all, it looks like you're new to the neighborhood ...
You'll find this community ripe with a tremendous amount of information to help you create, build, grow and maximize your endeavors as an entrepreneur.

 Welcome!

I'd like to offer some advice and a process that has served me well and something I've been cultivating over the last few years ... something I call "Reverse Campaign Engineering."

The principles for this process have been used in the military for quite some time.
The basic premise involves clearly outlining the directive, goals and end results or desired outcome of a campaign.

With that directive in place, you now "work backwards" to develop your strategic plan of action, step-by-step. This process can be used to identify everything from strategy, logistics, required resources, etc., and a comprehensive schedule and regimen.

Far too often we find people deep in the throws of "activity" but just as often find that the time they are investing could be maximized, with greater results, if they only had a detailed outline of the desired outcome to begin with.

Without such an outline, it's pretty easy to find yourself "spinning your wheels," losing focus and ultimately plateauing ... rendering inadequate growth and results.

So my advice would be to fist step back and ensure you know what you are aiming for first.
If you do not have a fairly clear picture of what you are trying to achieve, then I would start right there.

I suggest starting by identifying the following milestones ...

30 Days
3 Months
6 Months
9 Months
12 Months
18 Months

For each milestone, beginning with "18 Months" clearly define the results you want manifest in your business at that time. Then work backwards from there, progressively closing the gap between where you are now and where you want to be in 18 Months.

Now do the same, but this time begin to define the "actions" required to move from one milestone to the next, again progressively closing the gap between what you do "now," to what you "should" be doing to reach the goal 18 months from now.

You should begin to see a pretty clear strategic plan at this point.
Now step by step, you can begin filling in some finer details such as resources you'll need to move from one milestone to the next.

One ultra important thing to take note of is this ... Don't Get Too Caught Up In "the Perfect Plan."
And while this whole exercise is aimed at helping you get a clear view of where you want to go, how long from one point to the next should it take and what are the steps you need to take action on to get there.

Hence ... helping you create a daily, weekly and monthly action plan.
Just keep in mind that this isn't set in stone and it doesn't have to perfect.
In fact a lot of it is speculative for the most part and a very fluid idea.

The point is to get something laid out now, put it to work now, then refine and cultivate later as you move forward.

Now, this is another vital component to making the Reverse Campaign Engineering process work for you:

Take inventory of what your daily regimen looks like now and start cutting all the clutter out of your schedule. Also start looking for ways to maximize the effectiveness of the action items that need to stay.

So if checking your email 3,4,5 times a day is chewing up a good chunk of time in your day - cut it.
Set a prescribed time allotment that you will check email, say 30 minutes at 1:30pm each afternoon Mon.-Fri., then mark that as part of your daily action check list and stick to it.

Finding little time wasters like this and implementing a solution that will increase your overall productivity will really add up in the grand scheme of things. Combating enough of these time wasters alone may free up several hours of your day.

The other super powerful aspect of this type of planning is that it will help you stay on track and steer clear of distractions ... another infamous time sucker and productivity killer.

When an "opportunity" comes along - you will have a simple series of checks and balances in place that will allow you to very quickly identify the so called opportunity as a needed part of your 18 month strategic action plan, or as just being a distraction. I call this "raccoon syndrome," an out of control allure to shiny objects. And it is a HUGE factor in causing people, especially entrepreneurs, to find themselves in a place of feeling overwhelmed, over tasked and under achieving. Which ultimately leads to feeling dissatisfied and weak.

So I hope that helps give you some insight from a slightly different perspective on how to create an empowering daily action plan.

Cheers!
~Richard

Very informative and detailed plan by Richard. I think it's great info he just shared. I'm thinking about taking his approach. I also do like the idea mentioned earlier about having 1 specific notebook for each day of the week. Simple but genius. Everyday is a new day. accomplish those goals you set out to accomplish on that particular day, do not procrastinate or else your business suffers. And the last point I liked that was mentioned earlier in this thread was focusing on one method at a time, mastering it, then moving on. This industry is impossible if you try to tackle social media marketing, ppc, seo, blogging, etc, etc, etc. Build your empire one brick at a time.

Good question...

It is way to easy to get distracted while online. Especially if you are on a lot of email lists...

For a new marketer it is easy to get pulled into a different direction every 6 hours or so with the next big product that the Guru's are promoting.

Be careful not to fall into this trap... especially if you are new.

The best thing that you can do is make a decision today of what niche that you are going to specialize in, and also what way you are going to market it.

From there, focus all of your time and resources on this one niche area until you have learned all that you can about it.

Then, find a way to monetize this niche.

After this... "rinse and repeat".

I find myself wanting to check out all of the new marketing "gadgets" and forget my original goal.

Focus and put your plan into motion....

Best of luck!

Nate
