Labels. I hate them. I'm fuming, no, I was fuming, over a label.

Where to start. Ok, 31 years ago I adopted a little North American native baby girl. Undiagnosed but afflicted with fetal alcohol syndrome. (Plus other stuff as time went on)

Incapable of raising the children she conceived, Child and Family Services took them away from her, I stepped up to the plate and adopted, first the little girl and then (in the process of adopting) the little boy.

I am and always have been their mother. Did all the duties of a mother with the night feedings, the financial commitment, the laundry, running around, lunches, 3 meals a day, etc. etc. I have never had the luxury of being a grandma to these kids.

NOW I am a grandma. My oldest son had a beautiful baby girl twenty four hours ago. I did the grandma thing and took the ugly newborn photos around to show everyone what she looks like all covered in slime and goop and everyone tells me how beautiful she is. And she is !!!!

What drove me nuts were the people who said "Oh, another grandchild, how lovely."

Another grandchild? Where is the first?

Steaming. I got on the lawn tractor and drove vicious circles around my lawn trying to get my head around this. Don't these people understand that the label of "grandma" hasn't and doesn't apply to me? Grandma's get to choose how much time and effort they put into their grandkids. I've never had that luxury.

Today, after a good nights sleep and a short discussion with a friend, I realized that I don't need to be concerned about this label of being a grandma. I know in my heart, I have the legal documentation that shows these children are mine, my babies, whether they came from my loins or someone elses, I am their mother and if someone wants to label me crazy (which some do) or a grandma, what does it matter?

None of that matters. None of those labels matter to who I am.

I'm Joyce Penner and what I stand for, what I believe in, what decisions I make are not the same ones you or someone else may make and that's perfectly OK.

So ultimately I wanted to ask you, are you labeled? And does it matter? Or is that something that we need to leave behind so we can focus on the here and now and the future?

p.s. She's 6 lbs. 5 ozs, 19 inches long and her name is Macyn. And she's beautiful !! But that's just my opinion. LOL

Excellent advice Dean. I can even understand why people feel the necessity to put labels on people but sometimes it just doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

Joyce, I wouldn't get too screwed up about labels they will always be there and often people get it wrong because they ASSUME and we all know what that stands for. The only label you should be concerned with is the YOU inc brand because that is the label we are all trying to build.

Don't judge me until you know me.
