Permission Marketing... Need insight

Postby Katrina van Oudheusden on Tue Feb 02, 2010 7:34 pm

I was recently told about Permission Marketing... Does anyone know what this is about and would it be a good investment. I know that any information is a good investment. I am curious to see what people have to say about this book.
Is it any different then the idea of Magnetic Sponsoring??? :?:

Katrina,

Permission marketing had its early beginnings in the mid-late 1990s. It sprang from the move from so-called "push" marketing to "pull" marketing.

"Push" marketing was the traditional form of marketing, also referred to as "interruption" marketing, where you had to invade the personal space of the prospect in order to get their attention. Information was pushed via traditional, mainstream mass media in the hope of interrupting their concentration for long enough to get the message across.

"Pull" marketing was finding ways to attract prospects to you... by gaining their permission to promote offers to them, usually by providing information of high perceived value to the prospect. This eventually evolved into the concept of "permission" marketing.

Permission marketing has existed for as long as there have been media forms that involved lists (usually mailing lists before the advent of the Internet). By signing up to a mailing list, you give the marketer permission to send you offers. That permission lasts as long as the prospect continues to remain on that list.

Of course, unethical marketers always "pushed the envelope" by making it as difficult as possible to remove yourself from a list. And they used all kinds of devices and trickery to get you ON their lists — including co-registration tactics (by signing for one list you WANT to be on, you unwittingly agree to be added to other lists you may NOT want to be on). Stupid and commercially suicidal in the long run, but these morons aren't interested in long-term, profitable repeat relationships. They're parasites who simply move onto new victims when they kill off their present hosts.

The direct response advertising industry (direct mail, telemarketing and other list-driven models) was eventually legislated into a permission-based model because of abuses. The "do not call" registry is an example of this government regulation.

Attraction marketing and Magnetic Sponsoring are both offspring of "pull" marketing, or "permission" marketing. It's much more sensible, and less wasteful, than "push" marketing, but the most successful marketers usually strike an effective balance between both.

The Internet has made both forms much easier and cheaper. "Push" media includes banner and text advertising and spam (which claims to be "pull" by pretending to be sent from a list you subscribed to. But spammers lie to everyone, including the idiots who keep paying them to send to their bogus lists, so of course they lie to you about you having given them permission). Permission ("pull") media includes email advertising, ezine advertising, traffic exchanges, solo ads, RSS feeds and anything else which requires you to grant permission to be sent advertising offers.

Hope this helps!

.

Hey Katrina,

To some extent expanding your knowledge base is never a "bad investment."
If you're talking about the book ... yeah grab a copy.

Your personal library is one of the most valuable investments you could ever make ...
considering you read and study not just "collect."

But if it's not the book you're talking about maybe you could clarify what you're talking about.

Hi Katrina

They both have their own value and I'm glad I got both.

Though it shares the concept of MS, Seth Godin there's more to what he shares. Like Dean mentioned, If you visit his website, I remember you can download the full one. I'm sure I downloaded full one for free.

Then I read it and bought it.

It has given me great ideas. There is also one of his called ideavirus. Man, you got to check that book out too.

Richard is spot on in saying it can only help with investing.

I buy books and know, that it may have some repeat but...what I found Katrina, is each book has given me one idea each from them. They give me a different perspective, it sparks my imagination more, it gives one more idea.

And all you need is one idea and Kaboom!

So yes, go for it mate. It be an "investment" and worth while.

Hey Dean have you got that link to video on ideavirus, where he shows about the books. Katrina, thats a video you got to check out. Really insightful, he shows how he does it and what happened.

Brillaint.

Wow I'm glad I checked out this topic!

I agree Katrina its good to diversify and get different mentors spin on things. . . the you'll find that you will gravitate toward a "way" that resonates with your core.

John, That you could make an article out of that post!

Adam, thanks for the heads up on Idea Virus.

Dean, is that video on youtube? Sounds great! I have "suffered" (and benefited) from the idea virus a lot of my life.

Yeah Richard, I'm recovering from the "Who dies with the most books wins" syndrome. I only keep my favs now.

Lots of info in such a small thread . . . but what do you expect with the likes of these guys!

Wow, amazing information.
I guess what I was looking for was more insight on whether Permission Marketing was on the same principle as Magnetic Sponsoring.

John: your reply was awesome. I have to agree with Dee - you should turn that into an article.

Adam: I had never heard of Ideavirus until just now. I will have to look into that more. But I do agree that the more I read about the same topic from different authors it gives me a better understanding. I now realize how little I put into practice some of the most basic human needs: appreciate, reward, acknowledge, and just a simple thank you.

Thank you for commenting and sharing your insight. Helps so much as I travel down my MLM path.

Awesome Dean! Yes...!

I'm gonna get some Pizza's and watch these videos again. Hahahaha.

This was a very insightful video by Seth, and I know it can get people too because sometimes, you need to listen more as to what he is saying.

It's true what he says in this video, even though it was made a while back, it is still relevant. Consumers do think of "me" themselves, and really won't be interested only that which interests them, they see remarkable, or they have a pain and want it sorted.

I do see though, at that site where the video is, many just didn't get what Seth was saying, and were disagreeing, and yet, they didn't realise, they agreeing and saying the same thing Seth Godin is saying

You can see, in the comment under that video, the power of "ME." Instead of thinking more on consumer, they are still worried on "me" and "but it won't work out for...me.."

So that "me" is also working with them too but in a different way.

Definitely a good watch for anyone who wants some more ideas.

I liked the examples he gave, about first the Slice bread which no one wanted to know, until someone did something with it 15 years later. Then there was the French Bread and the french didn't want to know but when the founder and inventor got people talking, that was it.

It spread fast and dominated.

Amazing to see how years ago it was more info patent facts, and evolved to physchology, consumer thinking and need and even the word "remarkable" came up to. To be remarkable, to not be good but bad e.g. innovative because no one will notice a cow.

If you're wondering what I mean by cow check the 2nd link Dean shared here. I promise yah, you'll get something from them and it will get you ticking in the head.

Right...where's those pizza's!!!!

When watching this video, same too, ideas kicked off!

I had like words coming up, like for example..

You Incredible

REMARKABLE like in when we forward emails (RE:). Now that could be incredibile concept called RE.

Or FORWARD where you forward emails.

And it's concept is people coming together to spread each other's work. Using the tools already there.

Also the book I'm writing, I thought, "hey, why not create the book like a passport. Get the cover made like a passport because it's called I.D. stands for Identity. That just a book cover but a passport but it's really a book. :)

My mind is ticking hahahaha.

What kind of ideas and images came to your head?
