What are Your Favorite Quotes?

Postby Raymond Fong on Mon Oct 06, 2008 5:30 pm

No forum is complete without one of these threads...

(I searched for something like this and only found a tiny thread but that was company specific, so I thought I'd start a general one here...)

My favorite quote of all times:

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

- Theodore Roosevelt

This one is simple, but rings so true for me...

"I can accept anything, except what seems to be the easiest for most people: the half-way, the almost, the just-about, the in-between."

This is a great topic. I have collected quotes since I first began to read. Often a quote will return you to yourself at your most powerful. This is one of my favorites.

Until one is committed
there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back,
always ineffectiveness.
Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation),
there is one elementary truth,
the ignorance of which kills countless ideas
and splendid plans:
that the moment one definitely commits oneself,
then Providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one
that would never otherwise have occurred.
A whole stream of events issues from the decision,
raising in one's favour all manner
of unforeseen incidents and meetings
and material assistance,
which no one could have dreamt
would have come his way.

I have learned a deep respect
for one of Goethe's couplets:

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."

There are many! But here is one that stands out for me:

"It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life,
that no man can sincerely try to help another without
helping himself."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Great thread! This quote resonates with me -

" There is only one admirable form of the imagination; the imagination that is so intense that it creates a new reality, that it makes things happen - Sean O'Faolain

It's a song line too!

Climb every mountain, cross every stream, follow every rainbow, till you find your dream,
A dream that will need all the love (blood, sweat, n'tears) you can give, every day of your life, for as long as you live...so
Climb Every Mountain, Cross Every Stream...

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

"I bargained with life for a penny,
And life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.

"For life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

"I worked for a menial's hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage, I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid"

These are all so wonderful! Here is one of my favorites...

"Tell everyone you know: "My happiness depends on me, so you're off the hook." And then demonstrate it. Be happy, no matter what they're doing. Practice feeling good, no matter what. And before you know it, you will not give anyone else responsibility for the way you feel—and then, you'll love them all. Because the only reason you don't love them, is because you're using them as your excuse to not feel good. "~ Abraham - Hicks
