google in regions - how does it work?

Postby Marius Lombaard on Wed Jan 12, 2011 7:09 am

hi all,

when using www.google.co.za (south african version), there is normally a link in the left: "Pages from South Africa" which i assume does exactly that: filtering out any results that are not of south african origin.

the same for the uk version at www.google.co.uk, with a link that says "Pages from UK".

theres probably a couple of regions with their own domain extension which google owns, with similar links.

My question is this: when using this link, does google necessarily look for web results that are hosted on servers that physically reside within that country or region, or does google use some other way of determining the origin of a website?

my reason for asking is because in my case, many south african sites are not necessarily hosted locally in the country, but abroad. i'm sure there's even people in europe or uk that have sites hosted in the US.

the way google determines the origin of a website can have implications for the accuracy of the links mentioned above which are intended to only produce results of your country/region.

does anyone out there know how google determines which results to show when using the link to produce only results from your country/region?

thanks

I would recommend that you sign up for a free Google webmaster tool account. Once you have this you can instruct Google to geotarget your website.

Get the webmasters tool account and then check out the documentation. Hope this helps, kerry
