how do you know when a pingback to your blog is spam?

Postby Marius Lombaard on Thu Apr 21, 2011 1:37 am

this is the first time that i've been seriously blogging, and i recently got a couple of pingbacks on my blogposts.

i copied a list of websites into the "Update Services" section in my wordpress admin area that i got from ferny and raymond's traffic cipher course, and i think this was the reason for geting pingbacks recently.

so... how do all of you serious bloggers decide when to label pingbacks as spam and when to approve them?

Spam comments and all pingbacks should be welcome
to your blog, but only under one condition....

Change them to a 'Comment' that includes your keywords and
link them back to your articles and or other content online. :D

So Nathan, you're saying that where the link comes from doesn't matter? So you're not penalized by having spammers point to your site?

I guess the question then is "does Google even count links from known spammer sites?"

Google does not penalize you for spammers linking to your site. But they do look down upon if you link to a bad domain such as a link farm. Think about it it be way too easy to take competitors domain name spam the hell out of it with links so you get a better ranking. It just doesn't work that way

Ping backs are backlinks from Articles, Blog Networks etc. pointing to your blog (if pingbacks is turned on). So that is good. Now, to accept or not to accept.

I don''t accept pingbacks from anywhere other than a top level proper blog. Otherwise you leak a link back to another site. So this means you should not accept pingbacks from AMA or AYA (auto submitting sites)

To simply things, make sure you have Askmet or some such to filter out spam.

Then install the Pingback Optimizer plug in. Ping Back Optimizer now takes all these links and submits them automatically to RSS feeds so they are indexed and being noticed by Google. This way you are maximizing your benefit from those ping backs. Ping back Optimizer will accept the ping backs automatically if they make it through your spam filter. That should free up some of your hands on maintenence.

If you do this (and you get alot of ping backs), make sure your SEO campaign includes other sources otherwise it will look suspicious to Google.

You can, of course, always go into your setting and not accept ping backs. But I wouldn't 'cause you could get one from a real authority site.
