thanks for your input. maybe just to elaborate on my intentions, some of what my site will do:

1) it will mainly be an ecommerce site. users can register for free.
2) only registered users will be able to buy (much like amazon nowadays)
3) non-registered visitors will be able to view salescopy with a picture of the product, but more specific product details will only be viewable by logged in users and like already mentioned, only logged in users will be able to buy.
4) registered users will be able to partake in surveys - my main reason is that i want to get back to those who actually respond to surveys with targeted offerings in the future.

hope this gives somewhat of an idea as to what i intend to do long term. short term:

1) i want to conduct some research via surveys
2) users must register and log in (free) to complete surveys.
3) if possible, i'd love to be able to see exactly how individual members responded to surveys, in other words i want to be able to view their answers to questions.

sounds like wishlist member would probably do the trick, but to get going i'm not too concerned about security right now - just want to build a list and get feedback from prospects.
