I am getting a lot of spam comments on my blog
I have received about 30 spam comments on my blog in the last couple of days. I installed a spam blocker plug in tonight and hopefully this will fix the problem but the blocker will only catch them if they spam me more than once. Does anyone know of a good way to catch the spam on my blog before it gets posted?

I use the plugin Akismet and also changed my blog settings.

I make use of a plugin called "Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin" which forces the comment maker to confirm that they are not a spammer by checking a tick-box below their comment. Take a look at how it works by following the link to my blog in my sig below!

Hi Guys, thanks for the replys. I had already set it up for manual approval but it was getting to be a pain in the butt getting that much spam and having to label each comment as spam in my dashboard. Michael I will try that plug in out. Thanks everyone.

Donnie if you don't have Akismet installed then I HIGHLY recommend you do.
If you don't have it, then I would also venture to guess that you aren't using the most current version of Wordpress; which Akismet is a standard feature now.
1. Akismet is by far the best spam filter I've used for Wordpress. (over 200 sites)
2. It is ultra important for the security of your site to keep Wordpress up to date.
Using an outdated version leaves your site susceptible to hackers and other exploits.
Akismet is not going to slow your site down to any measurable degree that will affect your visitors experience. In fact unless you're sitting around monitoring your sites performance in nano-seconds you won't be able to tell the difference.
Nor will it have a negative impact on load times if you're concerned from an indexing perspective. It is accepted as the industry standard spam filter for Wordpress and therefore it's activity is widely recognized by search bots etc.
As you've already found, manual comment approval is a pain, especially if you have a lot of comments or you get a lot of spam.
Akismet has successfully caught 98% of the spam I get on my network of sites.
It will occasionally catch something that isn't spam, so we'll sometimes quickly browse the spam folder to see if we recognize anyone. But then with the click of a button it deletes all spam and I can get on with more important things like creating more content and following up with visitors, etc.

I would install http://disqus.com. It is a great commenting platform plugin for WordPress. Will eliminate spam posted to your blog.

I agree with Michael, "Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin" rocks. That little checkbox has eliminated 99% of all the spam comments that were coming to my blog

Akismet is highly recommended. I've used it before and it blocked thousands of spams I got from my client's previous website.

I have been using Akismet myself, it's pretty easy to set up (since already there LOL) plus you just get an API number from wordpress.com (takes just a few minutes)
If that doesn't take your headache away, then try the plugin
Hope It helps

I agree with Michael and Ray -- I also use the Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin - it's just awesome. I get 1 spam comment once in a while
I have ditched Akismet and never looked back.
Hoe this helps.
