ETA: Here are a few more questions as well as a site that I am working on.
If you do SEO I would like to ask you a question. What would you call this site & what keywords would you use? http://skywatcher1973.weebly.com/ Can someone tell me how the SEO works? Just the short of it. Like do the keywords go off of your site name or the content?
Everyone is telling me to set up a website. One that is not the companies website, but I am not sure what kind of site I am supposed to make. Do I make it about the product. the company, my family? I am not sure what. I see so many different types of sites & some offer products, some offer free help. I just am very confused by what to make. Any help would be great!
ETA: I am talking about any type of website. Like maybe what some call a capture page, squeeze page. I know it is about branding yourself, but if you are new to this type of life then you really don't have much to say at least I don't.

Hello Beth,
It's a self-hosted wordpress blog that brands you.

Re: Setting up a website
There are many types of websites, because each serves a different purpose. Think of it this way
You are hungry. Where do you go? What do you want to eat? How much are you willing to spend?
Basically, you don't go to Home Depot when you are hungry. You do not go to Red Lobster when you want Pizza. You do not go to fancy Italian Pizza Restaurant, when your budget allows only for Pizza Hut.
Do you see the pattern? It is the same with creating websites. No one can tell you what it is supposed to be about, because only you can decide what it is you want to promote, what you want to write, what you are actually able to write about etc.
I assume you want to monetize your effort. If so, the website should be connected to the product(s) you want to promote. It could be your own product, such as home made candles, it could be an affiliate product, or an MLM opportunity.
The bottom line is, you first need to know what your site is about and what the purpose of it is, before you can choose what type of website to set up. Blogs are certainly not the only option, although for the needs of most people on BN, they are the websites of choice.

Re: Setting up a website
Hi Beth,
It's better to brand yourself than to promote your company.
For a couple of reasons. You may switch companies down the road and if that happens you would have to start from scratch again. That's what happened to me. I had promoted my company and everyone associated me with that company.
However, if you brand yourself, than no matter what company you are with, or switch to, people will associate you with the brand you build for yourself. Does that make any sense?
I would start by setting up a blog. Not a free version of Blogger or Wordpress.com but a self-hosted blog. What that means is YOU have control over it and nobody can delete it or take it away from you (like Blogger.com and Wordpress.com sometimes do.)
You can get a cheap hosting at HostGator. You just missed their Cyber Monday sale where everything was 50% off, but you can still get hosting for as low as $4.95 a month.
Then you set up a WordPress.ORG blog which is free and can be done with just a couple of clicks in your HostGator Cpanel. (They have great customer support to help you do that should you get stuck.)
Your blog can be up and running in 5 to 10 minutes.
Then you just start posting valuable content. Things people in your niche want to read about. Don't make it about your product. Make it about YOU. Build a relationship with your readers. If you do that, they will opt-in to your newsletter (which you can set up with an Aweber.com account for just $19 a month or iContact.com for even less.)
That's were the monetizing of your blog starts. AFTER you build that relationship.
You can write product reviews of the products you use and add your affiliate link. Don't do that too often or people will get off of your list. But every once in a while let them know what you are using that works.
You can also put banners to affiliate programs you use in your blogs sidebar for people to click on.
So, to sum it up for about $25 - $30 a month you can have a great money generating website ....IF you do it the right way.
I would suggest searching on Google for "mlm blogs" and see what other people are doing.
I hope this helps you.

Yes WordPress is very ideal in creating your first site. Some would use Blogspot but most of the people and internet marketers use WordPress since it has a lot of cool and useful plugins you can choose from that suits your needs.

Re: Setting up a website
Well you have to consider your options well. It will cost you money to host a website and unless that will serve some useful purpose, you don't do that yet. Internet marketing has many options and you if you don't know much about something its better not to do it until you know how to benefit from it. For example, if you create a squeeze page and generate leads and then don't know what to do with that list so what?
Use the method you are most comfortable with and learn as you go. For me personally, I have gone through the whole thing without hosting a website, as I use other strategies that work well too. Thats the beauty of the internet. There are thousands of ways to skin a rat.

Hi Beth
I would say it's best to go for self-hosted wordpress blog site. It's free (except for the hosting fee), there are tons of templates (free), it's easy to manage and it grows with you. You can start with 3 pages and expand the site as you and your business grows.
You can create unlimited number of pages as well.
It's the best business partner
I would think starting with a blog about yourself first and you will be surprised... it will evolve as you mature as a marketer.

Beth
I know how confusing it all is. I was where you are about 3 years ago. I have spent $1000s of dollars learning what I know now.
Start off with a blog site that is run on WordPress. I encourage you to brand yourself first.
With the ebook WordPress How to for MLM it is easy to do yourself. http://wordpreshowto.biz.
There are plenty of good free themes to start out with and tones of good plugins to make it easy to manage. The community of BN members and YouTube has lots of good suggestions on which plugins to get started with.
I also have a free ebook on the cPanel questions that I give to those who buy the Wordpress How To ebook.
Take some action and you will find the solution that works best for you.
