Postby judia andrew on Sat Dec 04, 2010 10:35 pm

Hi guys

I am in the process of giving a face lift to one of my site. But what I want to know is without making it crowded, what features do you guys find appealing when you go to a site. What makes a site interesting and what are the must have features to appeal to readers. Give me ideas of colour, plugin, features stuff like that. the site I am trying to improve is www.simplehealthtips.net. visit the site and give me some pointers to improve when I upgrade.

Your time appreciated  :?:

Hey Judia,

This site looks awesome... You have done an awesome job. Especially with the social buttons, the opt-in box in the right sidebar and its really looks awesome.

My only suggestion is I would work on the headlines or name of your posts. Make them peak a little more curiosity as if your writing email subject lines.

Other than that I think you have done a awesome job!

Thanks Kevin. I know what you mean with the titles, but since is about health stuff I have no idea how to peak their curiosity. There is only a few sites like mine in this niche and they are more about medical stuff, so i have no website to follow lead, if you come across one let me know. appreciate your comment

Hi Judia, one of the things that really stands out as a requirement for your site, it an "About" page, where you could tell your visitors a little about yourself & why you have established the site. A picture of yourself both on that page as well as in the header would also be a good thing. Goes to credibility of the author of the articles & posts, visitors get to know, like & trust you.

Other than your page where visitors can submit a request to you via email, you may want to also add in a "Contact" page that gives all the methods on how visitors can contact you & ask you questions.

As a site where you could be seen as giving medical advice of sorts, you should also be having a page for Disclaimers, Privacy Policy (collecting email addresses), Terms of Use etc

Hope this helps,

Hi Judia,

Placing a link in the forum is strictly prohibited. Just a heads up because some people take it to heart when they see it :).

Your sIte looks really good and my only suggestion is to follow Michael's advice.

When I build a site, I see about 90% of visitors go to your "About Page" and spend the most time there.

Why?

It is where they will learn about you, your experiences and see if they are able to connect with you.

Most likely will make the decision if they can see themselves working with you, buying your product, etc.

.

Hi Judia,
Here is my initial evaluation of your site ...

First impression: it's very inviting and I really like the use of white space.
The colors etc., give a fresh, spa like sense of calm and peace. I like that - it makes me want to read more about what the site is about.

Here is a where a few problems come in from my perspective...

#1 - Your main navigation links are too similar to your header image design.
The links at first glance look more like a tag-line in the header graphic.
This makes the "navigation" disappear - not good.

#2 - the header(logo image) + the large image under it make your header far too large in my opinion.
You have 580 pixels dedicated to opening images in the header before your primary content is even visible.

There is a design principle that you want to be aware of when putting websites together ... the rule of 3rds. Take your page and split it into 3rds. The upper 3rd, especially the content visible in the screen without the need to scroll down, should be where you put your most important information.

At this size, your current header dominates the entire screen, forcing the viewer to scroll before they get to any useful information ... including your optin offer.

I would look at incorporating the lower image into the main header with the logo included in a unified image.

Next I would move the navigation down below the header and make it stand out more.
Perhaps using some decorative elements to make the links look more like buttons.
Something that makes it crystal clear that these are links you want people to click on.

#3 - OK, once you get to the main content I like your continued use of white space to break up the blog posts. But there may be a little too much. There is a substantial gap between the headline and the social icons and post excerpt.

Currently you have roughly 114 pixels of space dedicated to the post headline. I would try to get that down to at least half that which will make the headline feel more integrated into the post.

Right now it looks very disjointed.

#4 - You are using the full width page template in your theme for the individual blog posts. I would recommend you use a sidebar/content template instead.

Full width page templates definitely have their use, but this isn't one of them. You have a captive audience as your visitors read your blog posts. You want to make sure you keep your "offers" or list building elements in front of them.

Making your sidebar visible in your blog posts will ensure they have another opportunity to see your optin offer, etc., as well as access your social media connections., etc.

#5 - Overall those are the key things I picked up on at first glance.
The only other thing I would keep a close eye on is your optin offer.
First impression for me is that it's a little weak.

Building your list is one of the most valuable assets you can create for your business, so you want to make sure you are putting a super compelling offer in front of your audience.

That's my first take.
Hope it helps.

I like it, but some of the navigation (Product Query) breaks in Safari browser on Mac (see attached image). Also, as Richard pointed out, there is a lot of white in the headings. I am not sure if that's intentional or not, but it looks too spread out.

"There is a design principle that you want to be aware of when putting websites together ... the rule of 3rds. Take your page and split it into 3rds. The upper 3rd, especially the content visible in the screen without the need to scroll down, should be where you put your most important information."
I was reading some stats and discussions about this rule, and some people think it is getting quite obsolete. They argue, that people are now used to scrolling. Some even went as far as to argue, that the most important information should be in the second of the "thirds", saying that people often ignore the top banner and automatically scroll below it.

Still, your top of the "thirds" is quite big. You could make it more compact, maybe merge the image with the logo, make the logo smaller (it really is quite big), or you could even completely remove the top image and get to the point (your posts), so to speak.

The colors are nice, most people like blue. However, the blue in the footer is quite saturated, maybe you could just leave it white, or lighter blue (or make a gradient).

And lastly, I would reconsider the use of full-width pages for your blog posts. The lines of text are quite long, plus, you are missing out on some on page SEO stuff, like tags and inner links.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to visit my site and give me pointers. As I mentioned before this is the site at the moment and it is gonna be changed in a month. I am no techie so I am working with a site creator. great that i thought about you guys.

very helpful tips. will pass it on to the person and get it fixed.

As you pointed out I am going to add privacy, disclaimer, contact page. But I do have another blog where I have an about me page. Since this is a health related site I didn't think it is inappropriate. I do have the follow me link. Do you think it is essential?

Thanks richard every point worth gold. I would pass it onto my web designer to fix them. the page tabs are gonna be on the left side this time but I am happy that you pointed about the post when you open. It never striked me.

All in all every one of you gave me great insight I am thankful for that. I will get your advice when she finishes and you can give me pointers to change before the final launch

Yes Judia, I do believe an "About" page is essential on this site, probably even more so with it being a health related site.

Your visitors need to know who you are and why you are recommending the products you are! How have they helped you, what was your state of health before you started using the products etc

You are you own best customer, your visitors need to know how you have benfitted & how your knowledge can benefit them.

It doesn't have to be all about YOU, but it should be about the site & why you have built it, using your experiences as a reference.
