I tend to do a sort of mix and match. I will write the main text in Word and then use a free html editor like Kompozer to do the highlighting etc.
But, the tinymce plugin also works very well.

Mike,

I often write the main body of a new post or article in word but then I use Frontpage as my html editor. I started using it years ago and like it because it allows me to write code that does not include extra formatting codes.

One of the things that I find very annoying is the way word duplicates formatting line by line and paragraph by paragraph.

What ever editor you use is a matter of personal preference of course but I do find it hard to code html directly in the word press editor because the window keeps reseting to the top of the window.

Have a good evening

Another plugin I like to use that is similar to TinyMCE is WP Super Edit. It lets you customize your visual editor toolbars and also has the ability to add tables and better font size and type selections.
