Blogging….Should I Be Thankful?

Postby Jim Ticehurst on Tue Dec 20, 2011 1:21 pm

Ok so you are now wondering why I should not be thankful right? Well with your permission I will get back to that in a moment.

First let me ask you this:
Would you like to meet; Tom Mapother….or Jerome Silberman…..or Walter Willison….or Camille Jave….or Elaine Bookbinder?
If the answer was No then you just avoided meeting Tom Cruise, Gene Wilder, Bruce Willis, Brigitte Bardot and Elkie Brooks….

Would you pick an argument with;
Terry Jene Bollea or Henry McCarthy?
If the answer was Yes, then you just picked a fight with Hulk Hogan and Billy the Kid.

So whats all that got to do with anything you may be asking….
Here is my question;
When we start a Blog should we use our own names?
If we use another name and mess up then we can just start using another one? If we want to swear or say something that we shouldn’t then who is to know? When we use our family name sometimes we can so easily put the reputations of both ourselves and our loved ones into jeopardy, why take the risk?

I am considering starting a Blog and although I do not wish to use my name as the Blog title I am considering using a non-de-plume (made up name) as the creator of the blog however I would appreciate comments from the forum before I get started.

I believe that people paint an image of the author (or person in question) by their name. I personally lost a great friend and I will say his name here, it was John Luck and he was a giant of a man who had the nickname ‘Big Lucky’ he lived up to that name and it killed him, He was a great friend, and I miss him.

Just a short while ago I had to go and see an eye specialist and his name was so off putting that I very nearly never went to see him, in the end he could not have been a nicer person….so whats in a name?

So should I be thankful?
My surname is Ticehurst, (there is a village in England named Ticehurst) but the first recorded person with the name Ticehurst was in 1562 and his name was Thankfull Ticehurst.
Now I am thankful for many things but I kinda think that name might be just a bit ‘over the top’ for me I think that I would like something a bit easier to remember?

Anyway the bottom line is this:
Do you think that its right and honorable to change your name on a Blog?
that’s all, many thanks, regards Jim Thankfull?.....make that Jim T.

Your name, Jim Ticehurst, is unique as are you, and unique names are easier to remember. My vote is that you be authentic and consistently develop your online presence as someone people will like, know and trust. Its ok to make mistakes, but learn from them and evolve. I've been learning a lot through EzineArticles, because they thoroughly review your article- for free, and will not publish until it you meet their standards, while at the same time, they give you helpful suggestions. I'm thankful for that. Also, if you're using a hosted Wordpress for your blog, which is highly recommended, plug-ins like Scribe SEO will score you on your SEO optimization and research where you can back link, which helps when developing content. Anyway, Jim Ticehurst sounds like a friendly name and I encourage you to let people get to know who you are! PS. I worked with Tom Cruise on Jerry McGuire, hiding behind Bonnie Hunt as her stand-in. Hahaha - long time ago. Good luck with your blog - and another recommendation for free - Sandi Krakowski is awesome and offers 30 days of free blog training at http://arealchange.com/blog.

I started my blog in 2009 a little before all of this YOU inc, YOUR NAME.com started becoming popular.

I was green and still learning things. My blog name came about after witnessing the many struggles of newbies coming online.

I use my blog to tell other newbies of my online journey. It is under going some changes currently, hope to be back posting soon.

I do have a domain of my name, just have not been to fond of using my personal name as my blog.

I have seen bloggers use a domain other than their name and do quite well and also others who use their name and do well with it.

I'd say it's probably more about your content and what you are planning to use your blog for.

Remember when you are blogging you are really branding yourself online. Your name is your reputation. You are known by your name. Who would recognize that the name you use or refer to is the same person they are looking for.
If you use a pseudo name, you would have to start all over to build that name for recognition. The many people who already know you would not connect the other name with your branding until you say they are the same person.
Whichever you choose, establish yourself under one name and be known for that!
