Hi,
I'm just wondering if attending my company's national convention would add any real value to my business, and move it to the next level. I live in Africa, and the convention is in the US, but my uplines have been trying to talk me into attending the convention. And i ve only made double my start up cost, form this business, in about 6months. I am just skeptical about spending money on a venture that might profit me little. Any ideas, please?

Please don't be offended by what I'm about to say. In fact- I'm not a person who is into hype, so I'm not promoting events for the hype- however.....you are demonstrating a mindset of scarcity, not abundance.
One of the best things you can do to build your business is your major company events. NOt only for you, but for your team. Add the costs for you and your team to get to these events. Make it a part of your budget. Why? It will make your view of the company experiential- it's no longer the company I'm working with, it is MY company. It makes everything that much more tangible
Your best tool is getting people to these events

Let me ask you a question.
If you invested $500,000 into your network marketing business and the company was having a convention, where all of the top income earners in your company were going to be there and training on what they did to get to that level, would you go?
If the answer is yes, you should go. If the answer is no, stay home.

Attending a company event, especially on the National level is key for most be people to take their business to the next level. Being at the event with like minded people who share the same goals, same visions, same struggles, etc. can do a world of difference in what you do in your business. Theres a level of motivation as well, it can give you a fresh look into what and why you are doing what you're doing.
If you plan on growing your business, then attending an event is an absolute must. If you are doing it as a hobby and aren't serious about taking it to new heights, then maybe you shouldn't bother.

Here's a different perspective on this:
First, before you spend a lot of money going to a convention, make sure you're in the company you plan to stay with. If you have minor doubts, the convention can get you "over the hump" and increase your enthusiasm. If you have serious doubts, don't waste your time or money going to the event.
Second, international air travel, plus the convention cost and lodging, are very expensive. It might be a relatively minor expense for someone living in the US, but crossing the ocean can cost thousands of dollars. What if you spent that same money on marketing and recruiting? Where would that put your business?
So, I'm not trying to influence you but I thought you'd like to hear another point of view.

Yeah you should go "if" your business means something to you. The first convention I went to made the business "real". Real people, real culture, something truly tangible, plus you'll meet your own team members and start to really develop strong relationships with them and the company founders.
If I could have done one thing differently my first go around it would have been to be more proactive. Instead of waiting for my company to have meetings I would have created my own more often at or near the company headquarters. That's how teams really start to gel.

Daegan

Daegan has a fantastic point and I would agree. Its important to create your own momentum and demonstrate your own leadership if those things are lacking in your organization.
I attend events when I can and I would just say that if its in your budget, go. However, if it's a choice between spending the money to go to an event and spending the money on advertising and training courses and such, I would say dont go.
Sure, national events have "training" at them. But more often than not, I find them to be more of a pep-rally and leave you hungry for the nuts and bolts of how to do it. I would say invest that money into programs like Magnetic Sponsoring and others that are going to give you much more in the end.
Ive seen workshops that were about how to build a "dream board". Thats ok I guess. I call that scrapbooking and I cant justify the cost of an event to learn how to scrap book. If your seeking motivation, learn to generate leads and sponsor people, that will give you motivation as well.

Re: is it important to attend my company's national convention?
Hello Chioma, This is a great question. My opinion is that if you can afford it, go. If you can't afford it, don't go. It's as simple as that. Don't let your upline play mind games with you! If you are determined and motivated to build your business, you'll do it with or without attending one major event.
On the other hand, these are usually good places to meet like-minded people and, for myself, a lot of fun. So, if you can't make your next company's major event, no big deal. But if you can plan for the next one by putting some of your profits aside to cover expenses, I'd highly recommend doing that.
In my 6 years of attending all but one of my company's major events, I've found that pushing your people to go when they can't afford to is stupid. If the event doesn't live up to the billing - and, honestly, most of them can't and don't - they may end up resenting you, they'll resent the company, and they'll resent the industry. I've seen this happen.
Bottom line is that if you want to go and you can afford it, it would probably be worth while. But if you can't it's not the end of the world or your business.
Best Wishes!
Kevin
