OptIn Forms - Love Em or Hate Em ?

You know when you go to a webpage there are typically 3-4 variations of a form asking you to signup for their newsletter or to receive a free report, ebook, bootcamp, etc?

They tend to be one of these...
  • Classic OptIn Box - these are the standard boxes you find on every site, usually in the top right.
  • PopUp - pops up on the screen when you first enter the site.
  • Footer OptIn - these come up at the bottom of your screen.
  • Exit Pops - these are those boxes that popup when you try to leave a site.

Here's a question....
1. Which one do you like?
2. Which one do you dislike the most?
3. Which are you more likely to fill in?

Feel free to expand on your answers and rant if you want - Go For It!

The Classic optin box would be the one I like the most, and the one I would most likely fill in.

Like most people here, I understand why there are pop-ups, but they are slightly annoying as they block they page you are trying to read. I would like to know what, or how I am optin in to before I send my name and email to someone, so I tend to get rid of them.

Footer Optin I ignore, and since you said feel free to rant, I will...

I am beginning to DESPISE exit pop ups. Not the normal last chance to enter name/email ones, but the "WAIT BEFORE YOU GO" ones, then the IM box pops up with some imaginary opperator wanting to "talk" - in reality an auto responder offering you 10% - 30% off.

Yes... I understand why that method is used, but does it really work? Or does it just annoy the crap out of people? It also smells to much like desperation, like a salesman willing to do anything to make the sale, instead of letting it walk away.

Hey Richard,

Good question. I prefer the traditional opt in box.
I also agree with Bryan on the "are you sure you want to leave this page" pop ups. Annoying at best.

I generally will opt in to most opt in sites. I am always curious to see what people are putting in their auto responders.

What i find is most people cannot keep me on their auto responder for very long. They are not offering value, they are only offering offers.

I even quit a popular Internet Marketing System because i was just plain tired of getting offer after offer to purchase the Hot new thing I need to get now. It's too bad because it is a great system, but I would rather not expose my list to all the hype and offer after offer every other day. It's not my style and does nothing to help me foster a real relationship with my opt in subscribers.

I think that I am like most people. If I am tempted to opt out, so are they. So for me it's not the opt in box that really matters, it's the quality of the content I receive AFTER I opt in that is far more important.

It does not matter as much how many opt in , what really matters is how many people STAY subscribed. If you get hundreds of opt ins everyday and hundreds of opt outs the next day what is the point?

I prefer the regular opt-in.
Most of the time, if I'm going to the page,
it's to find the opt-in so I can get more info.

The ones that slide in just aggravate me.
They just interrupt me right when I'm reading
what I went there to find out.

I'd have to go against the footer thing.
I've never even seen one, so for me I'd have to
doubt their effectiveness.

The pop-out when I'm leaving doesn't bother me
except like someone mentioned, it's the fake operator.

If it's a pop-up offering something I'm interested in,
like more info or something, then I have, in the past,
opted-in while leaving a site I normally wouldn't have.

So the message here is, if you're going to use an exit
pop-up, offer something new or more info on the same subject.

I like the standard opt-in box in the top right.
I dislike the pop up boxes when you enter and exit the most. I NEVER fill them out I just X out of them.

I don't use neither. I use an email link. Its a straightforward way of not only getting names but also any questions they have. Its also the absolute way I know I'm getting a real email address rather than the usual message from the address aaaaa@aol.com from dfasdfdisal sddfasadfs......

Howdy yall.... just to clarify...
The question is focused on you as the visitor, not which you prefer as the site owner.
I'm trying to understand how we as "visitors" respond to optin forms.
Thnx.

classic for me. that way "I" (what's in it for your visitor?) get to choose how i will respond. if i find your content interesting, i will put in my info.

i really like the idea of confirming the email. i have had enough of those bogus entries to last the rest of my life. not to start a rabbit trail but, does anyone know if there is a way to verify phone or email (other than format--i am asking about a service)?

Niiice Richard ;)

I cannot stand the pop up boxes when leaving from a site. I won't go back to a site just because of this. I just can't stand 'em!

I don't like it ...it's too "pushy" and seems to desperate (in my opinion). When I'm ready to leave a site, I'm ready to leave a site. If I want to refer back to the site I'll save it to my favorites. I don't want to feel "pushed" into staying there...saying to me, "hey, don't leave...get this such & such).

And, I agree with the annoying saleman concept...it's like saying, "hey wait, I NEEEEEEEED your business". :)

I'd rather have an opt in box placed where I can see it and I can choose to enter my information if I want what's being offered.

As for an opt in at the beginning. If I have to opt in just to look at the site....I'm outa there!

I like seeing all the different opinions on this subject.
