Popular Today...

Postby Pete Zafra on Thu Jul 21, 2011 12:34 pm

Hi everyone, I've been posting articles on Better Networker for a while now and I'd like to ask what it takes to actually end up on the homepage of Better Networker under the Popular Today area? I have some content that have like 7 fb shares and 7 retweets with 150+ views but it doesn't show there. I'm also curious what it takes for your content to end up on the better networker emails I receive a lot.

Thanks! :D

So basically what I do is join a group? Is there a particular group that you would recommend?

Well Pete,
I am for one who landed on the front page of the Betternetworker.
The article I wrote, 'Do Handing Out Samples Work." It was dated Tuesday May 3, 2011 (I just happened to made a copy of it)
I tried writing on a topic that was unique, and particularly something that I had been working on for some time, so I asked the question to the BN forum.
I posted a question, conducted the discussion, came to a conclusion, and I learned a valuable lesson.
Good luck to you and keep getting involved in the discussions here!

Well, hello again, Pete. I did it again!
I landed on the "BN's What's Hot!" list. It was dated Septmeber 21, 2011. (I also printed out a copy)
The article titled, "Prospecting Question" was posted before the BN forum. It noted that this forum thread is a freakin' goldmine of training tips and advice on prospecting.
Getting involved and participation is key to getting on the front page of "BN's What's Hot" page.
Keep writing, keep being involved and ask questions here on the BN to get the most involved questions answered by the real experts here!

Good luck and have a nice Day!

Awesome Mario! Congratulations on that! Good job!

Thanks for the tips! Will definitely start doing that and looking to land there as well. So far my post has been sent by the BN autoresponder once already. Looking to hit that again soon. lol

Good luck and have a great day as well! :D

I think their is validity to Lynda's statement, but I think it's more about the title of the post or the subject itself.

Is it generic enough to appeal to many and is it the biggest or toughest question most often asked in this industry are probably 2 of the 1st deciding factors they weed all the posts through in their minds.

It's great you strive for the Top Pete, so I am sure you will somehow naturally begin a topic or subject matter that will end up there.

Hi everyone!

To answer your question, Pete, the content that appears in the "Popular Today" section on the homepage is based on the number of votes and shares it receives. In the past, this was usually an excellent way to determine which content was the most popular among the community.

As Lynda pointed out, however, some BetterNetworker members have recently started joining up with "tribes," where everyone in a particular tribe votes for and shares each other's content. As a result, what appears in the "Popular Today" section doesn't always represent the entire community's opinion on what the best content is, but rather a small group of individuals who are part of the same tribes.

We are aware of this issue and are currently looking for the best solution.

However, I can assure you that, since we are aware that the number of votes and shares a piece of content gets are not always an accurate representation of the community's response to it, we do not rely on these numbers when selecting content to be featured in the weekly "What's Hot" emails.

Instead, we look for the content that is the most helpful, informative, and creative, that offers advice, tips, or training that's new and fresh, and that we believe the community will benefit the most.

I don't know if you saw it, Pete, but your article titled "10-Year-Old Boy Wonder Gets Started With His 'Slight Edge' Journey" was featured in the "What's Hot" that was sent on Friday, September 9th.

So rest assured, we do notice you, (and everyone else!) even if your content doesn't always appear on the home page.

Thanks for your patience, everyone, while we look for a solution! :)

.
There's a colossal lesson in here guys...

I wont say its a right vs wrong concept, as much as it is "evergreen vs short sighted."

If an intimate team like we have here at BetterNetworker is "aware" of this issue
then suffice it to say the bigger players such as Google are as well.

The reason you are able to pinpoint certain elements such as "who" seems to pop up a lot, etc.
is because this type of behavior always leaves a footprint.

There is nothing wrong with tribes.
The key is utilizing that power responsibly.

Consider an important aspect of evergreen marketing...Search Rankings and Indexing,
which are heavily influenced by content quality.

Do not make the mistake of thinking they do not pick up on these footprints. It is just a matter of time until measures are put in place to counter abuse. Just as they are being dealt with here at BN.

What you find more times than not is a feeding frenzy of newbies following the leader.
While it may give you a trinket to brag about for a few months while you chalk up so called lead counts, eventually you see chaos and a wake of unsuccessful people that followed your lead, which is now dried up because the "strategy" was cheapened and treated as a novelty.

The point again is Evergreen vs Short Sighted.

As with many things that have come and gone in this industry, passed off as "the secret strategy" or "magic bullet" they almost always crumble under the foot of long term, stable, foundational marketing principles that have stood the test of time.

And businesses that adhere to evergreen methods are rewarded.
While the rest have their accounts shut down, campaigns and websites banned, etc.
But the most dangerous consequence is the mar they leave on the industry.

Again, I hope the people truly listening take away a priceless lesson here.
Stop chasing shiny objects and get yourself grounded in what works - long term.

~RB

PS:
On that note...
The least of the shiny objects we should chase is the dumb shit someone else is doing.
Let it go.

Focus on your business and finding people to connect with that share your idea of quality and long term stability for your business and strive to implement a philosophy of evergreen practices.

With each decision you make as a business owner ask yourself...
Will this serve my business's long term goals or am I chasing a shiny object?

Follow your heart instead of the circus and you will find long term success.
