Hi all I was considering copying a video from Youtube, the video that I was looking at most of us have already seen (it's the funny one about 'Is this a pyramid?'.
Well I am aware that there are some on here that have said that these videos are not allowed to be copied (they are made by Xtranormal.com) but is it actually illegal to copy them from Youtube?
I did look at their terms of agreement (Xrtanormal.com I mean) but to be honest I didnt really understand them and apart from that I am not a member of that site so I have not entered into any agreement with them anyway.
I was (and still am) under the impression that if a video on Youtube left the link 'Share' as clickable, that that means of course means that the item in question is copyable and so the video is open to the general public?
Any comments on this would be most appreciated, regards Jim T.

Jim,
I have this question too! I also read and did NOT understand the rules. Why can it not just say it is O.K. to ... ... ... an not O.K. to ... ... ... ?
Or a happy face by a list of certain items and a frowny face by a list of others.
Check Mark and Red X ?
IF I wanted to share a video on rules and regs. fine - but *I* want to share a video of a grown man standing on his head wearing a pink bikini burping his ABC's...really think I have a law degree? really?

Maybe we're dealing with semantics here Jim...
When you say "copy" do you mean you simply want to share the video by posting/embedding the video somewhere?
Or are you saying you physically want to download the video file from Youtube onto your computer?
Copyright law will come into play depending on what you intend to do with the video.
Here is Youtube's Copyright Tips page: http://www.youtube.com/t/howto_copyright
Im not an attorney and this is simply what I've come to understand over the years...
In any instance, Youtube or otherwise, you should assume any original work by an author, in any media/medium, is copyright protected as an original work by someone other than yourself.

Re: Copying Videos from Youtube
Thanks for those comments, it's nice to know that I am not the only one that gets a bit confused at times.
On a slightly more serious note I should like to very gently point out to anybody reading this particular post that this is just a conversation between friends taking place here, not legal advice.
My own personal understanding of this situation now, appears to be this:
If the 'share' box on Youtube is clickable then the code which is copied is not a copy of the video in question but simply a link to it, so copyright has not been breached as the item in question has not been copied, but just shared......
As most of us may have seen in the past if the video in question is deleted from Youtube at some time in the future then the link on the website that it was linked to can no longer show it?
That all all seems fair enough (if I have arrived at the correct conclusion that is?).....
Take care and have a great day, regards Jim T.

Re: Copying Videos from Youtube
Would it not be easier to refer people to the Youtube site? Once they see the article or video and click on it, it would take them to the video directly on Youtube.
You are not copying any video from it's original site, just referring to it.

Re: Copying Videos from Youtube
Hi fellas
My son just made a video, and he used a random song in my music collection to "hold the place" so to speak. He got to youtube, and just switched it out for the allowed music on the site. It worked out great. (we ran an experiment to see if I could explain how to make a video well enough for an 8 year old to understand) No laws broken.
