What is the Story about Keywords and Tags?

Postby Tom Boyuka on Tue Nov 30, 2010 9:35 am

The more I look at the topic of KEYWORDS and TAGS the more confused I get. I do not believe I am alone in this situation. Perhaps some of the more knowledgeable marketers on the subject could enlighten us mere mortals. Where do you get the KEYWORDS? Aren't they going to be the same for each industry and each sub-category? Why would someone choose my "keyword" over some other keyword. How many keywords do you use?...Ten? Twenty? a Hundred? How do TAGS fit in?
Any information on this subject would be appreciated.
Best Wishes to My Network Marketing Friends.

Tom, the most knowledgeable person I know of about this subject would be Richard Dennis and you know how to get a hold of him.

.

Tom, here's a small explanation about keywords and tags.

Keywords - Simplistically speaking, whatever you type in the search engine is a keyword.

For eg -

If you type make money online in the search engine, then that is a keyword with which you are searching the internet about making money online.

Now if you type how to make money online in the search engines, then that is another keyword.

All the following below are keywords and all of them are different keywords even though they are very related.

money
make money
make money online
how to make money online

I would say that you can roughly classify keywords into 2 types - short keywords and long tail keywords

money - is a single word keyword
make money - is a two word keyword
make money online - is a three word keyword

and it goes on.

money, make money, make money online - examples of short keywords
how to make money online, ways to make money online - examples of long tail keywords

Search engines rank content based on keywords.

If you write a blogpost on the best way to make money online keyword then whenever someone types that keyword (the best way to make money online) in the search engine, your blogpost shows up.

Now there is a lot more to ranking than just writing about a particular keyword but i think you get the idea.

Tags - These are essentially keywords too. Let me give you an example.

If you write a blogpost on network marketing training, then you can set your tags (there will be a section to enter your tags) as

1. network marketing training
2. network marketing training tips
3. network marketing training leaders

this is assuming you have these phrases (keywords) present in your blogpost.

Now when you enter these keywords in the tags column of your blogpost, they will show up beneath your blogpost.

These tags are links which links which point back to your particular blogpost.
Supposing you click the tag network marketing training tips (the tag will be present in your blog), then you will be directed to your blogpost.

So to summarize - tags are links to your content pieces (posts). Say you have 3 tags for a blogpost then those 3 tags will link to your particular post in the blog. If you have tagged network marketing tips for 3 related blogposts, then when you click the tag network marketing tips, all the 3 blogposts will show up. Search engines index tags.

Hope that helps.

Hi Tom,

To add a bit to the info Jagan shared . . . I use the free Google AdWords tool for keyword research. Here's the link:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Just add one of the words or phrases Jagan suggested in the space provided, click search and a list of related keywords will be displayed. One of the features I like is the "Competition" column. You'll find long tail keywords have less competition . . . so they are good choices to consider when writing posts/articles.

Hope this helps,
Susan
