SEO Dangers with Social Media

Postby Ferny Ceballos on Fri Sep 05, 2008 3:18 pm

I just ran into a great article on why spamming social media sites to
get links back to your site for SEO will come crashing down very soon:

http://www.charlesheflin.com/social-marketing-footprints/

So this goes back to the points I've been conveying in previous posts
about adding REAL value to the community and not just posting
articles and re-purposing other people's content so you can get more
links and rack up your points.

Along with getting slapped by Google, if someone finds you as one
of the top point earners here, then clicks on your content and finds
crap, it discredits those who are getting points by posting quality
content and teaching.

Post your own content, spend quality time putting it together and
don't take any short cuts.

Otherwise, you won't ever find real success.

Some of you techie types, feel free to chime in on your perspectives, (i.e. Jim Yaghi). :)

Charles is pretty cool when it comes to social marketing. Done the right way, it can be really effective. But crapping the heck out of it, doesn't work for anyone.
Okay, I finally opened up.

OK I understand their theory about dominating the rankings however, as we know, a lot of social stuff spreads like wildfire and good spammers can still dominate for a time at least and make a killing.
The twitter url feed will be an interesting test case on this I guess, how many times your url turns up in a day.
Anyway its maths and algorithm stuff, so I'll just keep on writing and hopefully it'll all work out in the wash.

We cirtanily shouldn't be "spamming" social media sites, however there is nothing wrong with submitting all of your posts/articles (not your home page, etc.) to them.

Absolutely, Joel.

I post any and all articles I write as many article directories and social media sites I can. And you definitely want to provide links back to your website.

But ultimately, it's not about if "there is anything wrong" with doing that. It has more to do with what Google decides is ok and NOT ok. That's the frustrating part.

Universal law. What you put out there is what you get back. So if you try spamming and actually get results the quality of people you are attracting will be poor and there will be no long term success.

Thanks for posting that article by Charles Heflen, Ferny. I thought that it was a great point. If we are moving towards streamlining and making things more efficient it will be a good thing when it comes. I say the heck with it...we should figure out a way to combine, twitter, facebook, youtube and squidoo into one platform so we don't have to go all over the place to post the valuable content that we are able to share. I know that there is some level of integration for the new media or web 2.0 as some call it, but I believe that in time it will integrate fully.

What I find VERY interesting is that Mr. Black Hat SEO himself - Howie Schwartz - was actually warning people about NOT doing this even back in 2006.

His whole angle was that these are actual community sites that people protect. More and more, people are turning to sites like Digg as their homepages to follow the latest news. In other words, some community members trust that news more than yahoo! news headlines, for example.

Overposting your stuff will have the community "circling their wagons" so to speak to protect their communities. Respect the community by providing as much relevant, valuable content as you can, as often as you can. Using software to automate the process is fine, and it still works, but you have to do it over time so that it looks natural and semi-organic.

Great comment, Ferny.

Yeap, giving valuable content is far more interesting and this will encourage your readers to come back for more anyway.
