As my marketing strategy widens I am looking at using Facebook more proactively to build relationships and generate leads. I already have a fan page, which I post my blog entries to as well as other peoples content relevant to my target market.
The big question I have is...do I use my current profile (which I use to stay in contact with family and friends) or do I create a new one specific to my business?

Re: How do you use Facebook?
It's only been a couple of months that I have started using my profile for both business and personal. With the ability to separate updates by your lists it makes it easier for me to manage one profile.
I have my family list, I also produce theater so I have theater friends as a list and I have my mlm friends, business clients and then my church friends. Many times I will post an update just for a particular list.
I do have 3 separate fan pages for my theater work, mlm, and my other business. The MLM I have begun building and already have 114 people on it in a short time.
Just some thoughts.

Thanks for that Richard. I know about the lists on Facebook, but didn't know that you can use them like that. Thanks for the help.

Howdy Anthony - I know with all the changes Facebook has made it should be easy to keep it all in one place, but I am still one that would prefer to keep them separated. I get in a hurry at times and just don't want to take the chance to irritate friends and family because I have made an error because of my not taking the time to double check my work. My vote - Separate accounts.

I personally have different accounts! I didn't know about the list! But I just rather keep business separated from family!

For me I think a new facebook page would be fine. My thoughts though

Re: How do you use Facebook?
I played around a bit with the lists and it seems like a great tool to filter the news feed, but I'm not convinced it can be used effectively to separate business and personal.
Thank you everyone for your views (and the dude who replied first for making me laugh. A totally unrelated reply to do with back surgery - Recesssed Lighting - best way to build muscle!!!! What are you on?)

Seperate them or it's going to get real messy. Family, friends for personal page.
Group or fan page for business.
You can create a fan page; or create a group which I've started to do ( group that is). The strategy is to use it to communicate with your "existing" prospects.
This will reveal evidence to others anyway and it makes it very productive too.
To communicate with prospects who took action, gone on your list, and to be used to get them to ask questions, build relationship with them, improve or create a new product so they "experience" they are in the process that serves your prospects needs.
But know, your hub is where it is at as facebook does not belong to us; so best to link back to your hub e.g. your personal branding website or blog. As that's your real asset owned by you.
I'd advise before you do anything..
1. Create a strategy.
2. Know how you're going to measure what works and what doesn't so you can get better at it.
3. Use it to develop trust with existing people on your list and existing customers who already bought.
4. Add the app on your blog so when conversation happens the people who visit your site can see and can join.
5. Be very clear to the group of the aim, your terms, and where it will lead too. Keep it simple so the message is clear and not distored by too many aims.
For example...
"We've created this group so we have channel to discuss what other challenges you are facing, and what solutions you need. We like to work with our customers to create the solutions and with an experience you enjoy because that is our culture. We are always listening at ways to improve the delivery of our services and products. Let us know how we can make it even more enjoyable and rich experience."
So it depends what business you're in, what you desire to achieve and other merits and just create a straight forward mission purpose, so everyone knows "why, what and where it lead to next."
Hope this helps.
You'll only know what works by measuring and testing.

CREATE A NEW ONE trust me you never know how the outlook of facebook might change. They could turn into google tommorow. Google could buy them there is know way to know what's going to happen.
You have to set up a shield for your biz. No matter what it is better to be prepared then not.
You should certainly again CREATE A NEW ONE

Following or become a member of the right community or group on Facebook is the key.
