SEO Tips You Should Know To Avoid Penalization

Postby Adam Morgan on Thu Jan 09, 2014 9:49 pm

Site penalization and webmaster guidelines can easily intimidate some website developers, owners, and SEO consultants. Primarily for anyone hired to augment site rankings or an owner that runs their own show, one slip down a ‘black hat’ path can not only result in tons of penalties from search engines but also considerable losses in site revenue and search engine rankings.

Though consultants and developers should have a better idea of how not to screw up a client’s rankings, if you’re a site owner/operator in need of some SEO assistance you may find the following information useful.

First: Who Penalizes and What Exactly Happens?

Search engines such as Google value what is considered to be fair and ‘white hat’ SEO tactics and look down upon (and penalize) tactics considered to be deceptive or ‘black hat’ SEO.

Though some may argue that a little bit of ‘black hat’ is always needed to really be competitive, the end results will definitely deter most people. Some common punishments for not implementing SEO best practices on a website are as follows:

A demotion in site rankings – This can range considerably based on the type of offense committed. A site may go from just being knocked down a few spots to several pages depending on how severe of a violation of the search engine’s webmaster guidelines.

A disappearing act – With this type of penalty a site may simply disappear from search engine results for a set time frame (for ex. some absences may go on for 2 months or more based on the type of infraction).
Complete removal – Finally, this punishment is considered to be the worst case scenario. In some more serious instances you may find that a site is completely removed from search engine results. This often entails direct contact from search engine personnel as well as instructions on how to correct errors.
Second: How to Stay in the Clear

To avoid any of the above scenarios, below are a few things to keep in mind when developing and promoting a site.

#1 Avoid link schemes

Since linking plays a very big role in online popularity as well as where websites stand with Page Rank and other ranking tools, treading the dark side of linking can cost you big on search engine results pages. Some dangerous tactics include: buying and selling links, participating in link networks and programs that automate links, and abusing guest posting opportunities as well as reciprocal linking.

#2 Be mindful of duplicate content

Duplicate content has many faces. Some is obviously created with the intent to deceive and manipulate search engines while others simply occur naturally. Many people are often red flagged by search engines for duplicate content that was unintentional.

A few examples of “non-malicious” or unintentional duplicate content are printer friendly pages, session ids, and URL parameters. These mistakes tend to come up in the course of site making and the penalties are usually less severe and not as often as other offenses.

Bad Content

Malicious duplicate content on the other hand may be sought after in desperate situations and usually entails stolen content (including spun articles) and the repetition of information on different pages within the same site.

Though many people are already aware that such tactics are strictly off limits, they sometimes fall into them from time to time. The culprit is often a lack of suitable content (or the willingness to obtain it) and impatience when it comes to search engine rankings.

#3 Strive for quality in all directions

Though its definitely easier said than done, the easiest way to avoid being penalized by search engines (in a general sense) is to provide a high quality site with content that users really deem beneficial. This alone should help tackle some of the traffic concerns that drive people to the dark side of SEO in the first place.

It’s true that even when developing a site the right way you may still occasionally fall into minor penalties. But the hope is that if you invest an adequate amount of time into development and are careful about how you go after your competition, your penalties and repair time will be far less than those who attempt to drive traffic to a horrible site. This obviously is not what the search engines want and has selfishness written all over it.

I agree, never buy backlinks. It is the #1 reason why sites get penalized.

Yes thin, spun, low quality content can harm your website and rankings.

Thank you for the tips, however my question is this: if the website is brand new and obviously it's got no rank at least in the first 10k pages do this tips apply? Does SEO matter anymore since most of us know how to generate traffic and make money?
