Top Arguments Against Network Marketing.

Postby JF Grissom on Wed Apr 08, 2009 12:33 am

Some of my down-line and subscribers have gotten hung up on these questions so I put together a blog post about it.

http://www.jfgrissom.com/top-3-argument ... -marketing

Do you have any arguments that you have heard you might like to share with others?

If so please share them.

Great Blog Jay!

Unfortunately MLM has gotten a bad name over the years and I have run across people that no matter what you say, they will have nothing to do with it. It’s to bad because I think it is the perfect business for everyone but especially for stay-at-home moms, students that need extra money, people that have jobs that can’t make it on one income, etc. For the most part, it is very inexpensive to start, you have flexibility to work around your schedule and the income potential to surpass traditional income.

I think the most common argument “is this a pyramid scheme”? I simply tell them that pyramid schemes contain no product or service. They are just an exchange of money (which is illegal) so no, we are not a pyramid scheme. As in all businesses there are levels of people. At the top is the President, below them are a few mangers, below them are more office personnel, etc. The structure is pyramid shaped but that is the only resemblance we have to a pyramid and as you move up in traditional business, you can also move up in our structure creating that below you.

Another one I hear frequently is “I don’t have the time”. I usually say, “then this is the perfect business for you because there is no set time or days you have to work. You can do it without changing your daily activities. You see people all the time, at the bank, at work, in the grocery store, etc. It’s just a matter of sharing information with others that you know could use your product or service or those that you know could use some extra money …… now we all know that there is a time commitment to this but if you are not going to get these people in because of that, they can come in on a slower pace and as they start generating extra income on the very part time level, they will start to see the benefit of putting in more energy and time. I have seen it many many times. Somehow time appears when the money starts showing up.

One more common argument is “I don’t want to push this on family or friends”. I ask them this …… have you ever seen a good movie or eaten at a good restaurant? Of course their answer is yes. I then ask them if they ever told their friends and family about it, again their answer is yes. I then ask them if the movie theater or restaurant ever paid them for that referral? Of course their reply is no. Our company pays you for referrals. We are like a distribution center without having to pay for overhead, stock products or have the traditional expense of owning a business, yet we are able to be the “middle man” between the company and the consumer by means of the referral process. The bigger income comes in when you bring in other “business partners” who want to do the same thing and you make a commission off everything they do.

I also tell them that they don’t have to know a ton of people. If they find a few, then the best thing is to work with them, tap into their contacts and now you are adding people to your organization by helping them build theirs.

Everyone needs some kind of hope for the future in terms of income. With so many losing their job and houses, I am finding that even those that have previously be strong in their arguments against network marketing are becoming open to the idea because of the low risk / high potential factor.

Good post, Jay

Many folks feel building an MLM business takes too long to produce a profit.

Most are afraid they'll run out of money promoting them before they start
to see any results, which is why funded proposal systems exist.

And many more are afraid they'll have to become salespeople to "push"
products and services.

I think the biggest thing is people need to realize with network marketing it is a relationship business and you need to build relationship instead of trying to convince or chase people. Become more valuable to the market place and you will attract more team members then you can handle.

These are very good ones. I heard this often before I changed my marketing methods... but you're right I still think this stigma is attached to our industry...

For the first statement (takes too long) I have offered to others that any business takes time to establish. So the only real choice if you want to have any business is to be sure you can sustain steady growth (even if it is only a little at a time).

Anything that is working (even if it is only working a little every month) will start to build momentum for you.

If you have one retail customer you can keep happy, he will eventually turn into two, and two into 3 and etc... etc...

The same with any business, even things we think are safe like grocery stores have to take time to build a presence in any community. A Von's opened up a block (Yes within walking distance) of my home and my wife and I still went 4 miles away to Ralph's simply out of habit... The now we shop at Von's all the time, but it took us a while to notice them, then break the old habbit, then finally use them regularly...

Same holds true with any business, even our MLM businesses.

For people who tell you that they are worried about running out of money, You can simply ask them how much can you afford (Most say nothing, because they are worried you're going to move in like a shark if you smell blood) so you tell them, "great we can work on a marketing program that won't cost you anything."

Then teach them how to market online for free.

And for people who say they don't want to sell you can just ask them, "Would you be willing to teach someone if I showed you how to do it online?"

These are great arguments Dventurous! Thanks for sharing them!

Yup yup yup!

Gotta show the love first or people will think you're just trying to sell them something they don't want or need.

GREAT point... for people who don't want to sell... you help them understand they want to establish themselves as an consumer advocate not a salesmen.

Another good point.

These are great arguments too! Especially the time one. We all have 24 hours right?
Good stuff!

2 shay kgmarketing. Relationship building through valuable information sharing is a huge key to success. Gone are the days of buying opportunity leads and pitching you're biz op to every single person that walks the earth. It's important to remember that no-one likes to be sold, but everyone loves to buy. The key is learn then share valuable information with the world, then your niche will be attracted to you.

Great post!

I was one of the ones who believed all mlm or anything off the internet was some sort of a scam. I was very reluctant to join an opportunity and learn the skills of network marketing.

After being in the place of the skeptic i understand how so many people feel when they are pitched on an opportunity. Although it makes sense that a pyramid scam is only the exchange of money and no product, it leaves us all with a challenge of how to market ourselves and products.

The only thing that changed my mind in the beginning was finding genuine people who i trusted. this took time and observation on my part. I believe that is the factor that causes so many network marketers to FAIL. Time and the time involved in building trust and relationships.

I recommend Practicing patients, persistance and perseverance...
