I am shocked how few "so-called" marketers really step up to the plate when it comes time to hit a home run. Here's how this started...
I'm hosting a huge marketing competition for affiliates of mine and I noticed two things...
1. Lots of lookers, and little leaders!
2. For what I'm giving away I was expecting way more competition!
To be fair the contest doesn't officially start until the 15th but still! I guess this indicative of people in general, or all marketers in general? Something I should know from my years MLM by now! I guess what I mean is I can see how someone can't connect the dots on a long term five year goal (even if I disagree)but this is like three months, come on!
Sorry if you feel I'm "out of line", I think I just had to let off steam...
I know this question may be more geared towards internet marketing but still what do you guys think?
Who's had experience launching/ winning an online marketing promotion or marketing contest?
Is anyone else sick of the mediocrity? Should I be?
Thanks much,
Ken

You're confusing marketing with selling. They're not interchangeable words. "Marketing" isn't just a less offensive word for "selling".
Do people understand the reality of the contest? What they have to do to participate? To win?
Or have you tried to market your contest, but just haven't SOLD it to them?
In a nutshell...
The role of the marketer is to identify a need and find a way to satisfy that need. (Needs define markets.)
The role of the seller is to get people to WANT what they need because, no matter how much they NEED it, until they WANT it, they ain't gonna BUY it!

They don't call me the Jiminy Cricket of MLM because we share the same initials!

The MORE you deliver the more you'll attract others who deliver. The only other part to this equation is effectively communicating WHAT you deliver (but the two go hand in hand).
John Maxwell says this best in "Developing the Leaders Around You." Leaders flock to leaders. Do more, and you'll get more of them.
With all that said, I don't think there's a 'leader' out there who hasn't needed to vent

Ken as an active affiliate marketer, I would say that it's something on your side.
I know that sucks and you probably don't want to hear it, but it's the truth.
We work with over 20 networks with thousands of offers and we blow through them fast.
When it comes down to paying the bills or trying to make your offer work, affiliates will take the path of least resistance, which usually means jumping to another offer that pays the bills faster and easier.
So I would take serious inventory of your entire model.
The sales funnel from top to bottom.
Your affiliate program from top to bottom.
Your product from top to bottom.
All of it and everything.
And the best place to start is with your affiliates.
Have you asked them why they aren't generating sales?
I would start there.
I bet you'll be surprised at the "whys" you get from them.
I'd be happy to look at everything as well if you want another point of view.

I agree with you guys. But I wanted to add something.
The reality is that although many people want success or want to win, when it boils down, fear sometimes takes over. See I have met plenty of people who say they want massive success and say they want the house in the hills and so on, but just don't truly believe it's possible for them and so they settle for the 'COW' mentality...
To really take charge and go for winning a contest, means the desire to give it your all must be there. You must really feel that you can win just as anyone else can win. Doesn't mean you won't have to work harder (or smarter) but that whole work thing just isn't part of some people's programs. So mediocrity is easier because it's quite comfy being in a space where everyone is talking about success but not really going for it.
I just think contests are designed to push the folks who are already in the game...yet to encourage those who aren't, to at least suit up...but hey, no matter what sport you watch, especially at a professional level (and this is a profession we're in), there are ALWAYS more spectators than players...

I'm with ya a bit.
Bottom line, before you get into a company that has your back - make sure they have your back. Don't let the interent keep your hopes alive, because it's just that - hope; not results.
Keep looking and you can find a company that provides you with such, because MLM is meant to be friends helping their friends and family! Let's not forget our roots for greed...
