How can you possible interact with everyone when you have a twitter following of 10,000 or even 500 for that matter?
How many Tweets do we actually take any notice of?
Twitter scrolls by so fast that its impossible to keep up, most of the direct messages are nothing but junk and not worth the time it takes to read.
So I ask: What is the point of twitter, how many tweets have you actually clicked through to the next page and did you find any worthwhile information?
Have you really had any marketing success from twitter or is it all just smoke and mirrors?

Personally...
..I'm thinking about it but I just saw a program that you can get followers by niche..
example: Affiliates, flower growers, etc..I can't figure out how people can grow
flowers in the net!!!

P.S. I think the program cost about 107 dollars per month..I lost track of it though since
I wasn't interested..

Smoke & mirrors, for sure! Anything you tweet is never visible long enough ANYWHERE to be of benefit to you or your marketing efforts.
Maybe I just don't GET it!

Re: How Many Tweets Do You Read?
Not smoke and mirrors in my view. It boils down to what you use twitter for and who you follow. If you jump on twitter and follow everybody under the sun and blast them with you business opportunity, you're missing the point. Twitter is about forming relationships and offering meaningful content. You should never constantly blast your business opportunity, no one will ever pay attention to you and it will become a waste of time. If you start adding meaningful content to the discussion you will be amazed on who is paying attention to you and who regards you as an expert on your topic of choice. This is one of the easiest mediums to gain access to somebody's circle of influence to eventually meet their needs with your products, service, or opportunity. This can't be done until a connection is made and not before. So stop with your opportunity commercials on twitter and start actually having conversations with people and see what happens.

Hey Darks ...
Excellent topic.
I'm actually in the process of doing some serious house keeping with my personal Twitter account.
I've been testing a lot of things, looking at organic growth, etc.
And what I'm fining is that I've wound up with a bunch of useless followers on my list.
Accounts that have no real human interaction behind them. The majority of these type of accounts are obvious "bots" run by outsourced talent. Thus, have no value to me what so ever - there's no potential to engage them or have a conversation.
And that is where the real power of Twitter comes into play ... an active, responsive audience.
So at the end of the day, this time 2 weeks from now I may go from 4000 followers to 1000. Who knows. We're working on cleaning it up without being red flagged by Twitter for engaging in questionable bilk unfollows of 100s of people at a time and so forth. But it is happening one way or another.
I'd rather have 500 super responsive people as followers - authentic fans and comrades - than 1,000,000 bots any day.
What does that have to do with your question?
It is the exact topic that is cause for the house keeping. I want to know what my peeps are up to. My real circle of influence. The real people I have an opportunity to engage with. I try to read what they are saying. And part of my new implementation on Twitter is using the new lists features.
But how in the world can I effectively help people and interact with them if I never hear them?
Instead I'm surrounded by a bunch of "buy my shit" or the ever so sneaky, politely disguised auto tweet pitch and direct messages saying "Hi thanks for connecting! ... buy my shit."
Personally - I'm over it!
I want to talk to real people with real lives in a real way. Authentic relationships. Although virtual, authentic non the less. And Twitter provides a "technology" solution to do so.
And while it may not be flesh and blood, face to face communication ...
the somewhat reclusive, shy, uber geek in me is perfectly fine with that.

Re: How Many Tweets Do You Read?
Twitter works if you use it correctly.
I have over 32,000 followers so yes it's difficult to read every tweet - but I have systems in place to help me. I use Tweetdeck so I can see everyone, I also have "favourites" and have set up searches etc.
Twitter has enabled me to make new friends, build relationships with others and more importantly make money
. In fact I get more hits to my sites (according to Google Analytis) than any other form of traffic generation that I use.
So many people don't get Twitter or use it incorrectly which is such a shame as its a great social networking site which if used well can bring you great results.
If you would like to connect with me on Twitter my username is: lilach_bullock

Re: How Many Tweets Do You Read?
Good question Brad, my answer is simple: as many as I can.
I have over 12,000 followers and the key to success with Twitter is to make an effort to interact, converse and reply to each and everyone on your list. Sure there will be some Tweets from people you will never read, and often times there will be ones that are lost.
But this is why Twitter has "lists". You should be using these lists and apps like Tweetdeck to organize your following so that tweets come in effectively. I have it set up so that I don't miss any tweets from my closest friends, can see tweets from all my followers based on organized groups of criteria and am constantly out there replying.
With all the 3rd party apps and effectiveness of twitter as a whole - there shouldn't be any excuses as to why you aren't getting tweets or answering them for that matter

Re: How Many Tweets Do You Read?
Thanks for the advice guys:
I'm still quite skeptical when it comes to twitter, how do you send a reply message with 140 characters?
All you can do is say thanks here's our facebook or am I missing something?
I have replied to many, many, many... direct messages and not once has there been any return response even from facebook friends...?
It's great to hear Lilach is doing well with twitter 32,000 how do you keep up?

Hey Richo'
Funny you should give me that nickname, I always end up with Dark's, Darkie, Darkside, Darkness... and sometimes other names "that I don't dare mention here
" from my mates
I have done a bit of training on twitter and how to use it, but I have never really warmed to it like some others...
