The manager of our local community food bank was in the store managers office the same time I was. I listened to what was going on. She asked for and received a 10% discount on any food stuff she bought for the food bank at the store. She wanted it delivered at 10 a.m. whereas the store manager explained to her deliveries were made by a young man between 4:30 and 5:30 on a daily basis. Not good enough for her. She "told" him it had to be delivered at 10, in boxes not bags and the boxes had to be unloaded and shelved by his staff as she isn't there at 10 and the person there wasn't able to pick up and move boxes.
And on top of her demands she came right out and told him, he was making money (with a sneer) off of her patronage so he should meet and exceed her requests.
I raised an eyebrow and met his gaze.
Wow !
But I realized there are people in network marketing who are exactly the same way. I've "joined" you, you are making money off me, so therefore you "have to" do this and that for me. Jim Rohn's philosophy, in my opinion, says it best: (paraphrased) You throw the ball, they throw it back. You don't get it back, that's their problem not yours.
This guy was in a tough spot. She was loud and abrasive and he knew she was going to walk out of that store telling everyone how he wasn't there to help her (i.e. delivery at 4:30 not 10 as per her demand). There would be some people that would listen to her and realize what she was. Others would not.
Some people are just not worth dealing with and you have to let them go. Not everyone can be helped. Not everyone should be in network marketing. Not everyone accepts the blame for their own lack of success when it's easier to blame you.
You have to let them go.
I've done it. Have you?

Yes...Joyce! I've had to let people go.
But first I had to learn a hard lesson...which is...I don't need everyone in my organization. Back in the early days I thought I had to push and pull anyone and everyone into my team.
I was trying to make everyone happy by meeting every demand. I was totally frustrated and one day shared my feelings with one of my mentors. I was totally shocked at his response. He laughed!
Then reminded me ... your job is to "locate, train and develop leaders" for the company. Keywork: Leaders
When I stopped trying to jump through hoops for everyone I met and started looking for leaders ... life changed drastically ... for the better.
It's OK...even necessary to let people go.

Hi Susan. That is so true. Pushing, pulling, etc. just isn't worth it at times but so many people hold on tight or worse, believe they have to do it for their team members.
So far from what you really need to build a solid and good organization.
To your success,
Joyce

Absolutely Susan, this is Black Belt Recruiting Lesson 1. I think MLM is just like building a corporate business. You start with an empty boardroom table with say 20 seats and the task is to fill those 20 seats with your very best people. Then once you have done that you teach those 20 people to replicate what you have done. I also think that alot of networkers get this wrong and try and recruit everyone, we are not in the recruitment business we are in the business building business.
Best Regards

Hey Graham. I agree with you 100% and now why is that so surprising.
Not only do they recruit but they feel they have to help and hang onto everyone. If it breaths, it's alive and must be nurtured, encouraged, supported and recruited. Wow !
Good to hear from you,
Joyce

Joyce, I must say that I agree with you. However, in so saying, I too have done the holding on too tightly saga, basically they have to help themselves, you can only do so much.
However, I hate to say this but in the spirit of honesty, I can remember my first hit at this industry and I had a hand out attitude, I sort of expected somebody else to do a lot for me. Granted, I have changed somewhat and my attitude is somewhat different these days, I want to help people succeed, but if I had not changed I would totally understand being cut loose!
Business is business, you can want to help people but they also have to want to help themselves.
All the best
Alan

Congratulations Alan ! You've failed forward in a remarkable way, in all areas.
You've hit on the best possible attitude. People have to want to help themselves.

Nice Post Joyce,
In a situation like this I would have to go with one of my Mentors Quotes,
Only go into business with someone that you would want to go on a 30 day cruise with.
That's what I Love about networking we can choose who we want to work with

I have family that I love dearly that I wouldn't go on a 30 day cruise with them!
A business relationship doesn't mean you necessarily would spend any extended period of time with that person. I have some really good business relationships where we work together towards a common goal but neither one of us would necessarily want to invite each other into our private lives as a cruise would suggest.
A good business relationship is unique and special, where there is honour and respect as you share a common goal. They may not necessarily be someone I would ask to come for dinner and be comfortable helping them brush the Rice Krispies off the chair before they sat down. Which I could and have done with a personal friend.
I totally agree with you that we can choose who we work with. That is a truth worth repeating.
Onwards,
Joyce

Hi Joyce, I sure have been there, done that! More times than I care to admit. But that's alright because I would rather continue moving forward, looking for that diamond in the ruff rather than let some people try to bring me down. You're right, you can't help everyone. Especially if they don't want to help themselves. It amazes me that people would sign up for your business and expect to make a lot of money without doing nothing! Then constantly wine and complain to you why the business doesn't work
