Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting a Business

Postby Don Egnor on Sun Dec 19, 2010 9:15 pm

What are the most important questions you should ask yourself before starting an MLM/Home Based Business? I will list 3 which I think are important but want the community to share their thoughts and pose the questions here so everyone can see them.

1. Do you have the necessary time to really dedicate to the business?
2. Is there someone you are able to rely on for help and guidance?
3. Do you have the necessary money to contribute to the business?

Hopefully the information we get from this will help someone if they are sitting on the fence and not sure what to do. If certain questions can't be honestly answered perhaps it will keep them from doing something they aren't ready for. I am looking forward to everyone's posts!

IMO the most important question is: Are you willing to do whatever it takes to succeed?

When you answer that question, money and time become secondary, how do I know that? I had 3 jobs, and no money when I found the business, but I did not have a plan B, this was my only plan, I found the money, and I found the time I needed, the rest is history..

5. How can the product be a benefit to the community.

I always question what works and what is hype. Does your product improve the community's standard of life.

For long term growth, your product must have a strong value to the public, it may have some kind of solution to a problem or a need, it is the best way to have a loyal customer base,

Don,

You have some good questions there and that's a good start. I think another question that should be asked is the following:

What problem are you trying to solve? (business is all about solving peoples needs or wants)

How many competitors are in your area?

Is the potential client base large, medium, or small, local or national, for women, men, children, or a combination?

Do you first believe in the services or products your going to be offering?

How much value are you attempting to bring to the marketplace?

How much revenue will I need to get this business off and running?

Good looking tie there S...show us your face! I agree with all of your questions and compliment you on a very good answer. The idea behind this post was to start with some questions and gather more from the networkers on here. I will add those to the list and share them with others. I appreciate you contributing to the thread but I still want more so lets keep them coming...I know they are out there!

This isn't asking yourself but this is the first thing you need to get locked into your mind. Do not expect overnight success. Any and all businesses take time. A business isn't a lottery. You don't start up then get up the next morning to check your numbers. That only leads to disappointment. A real business takes time and what you do today adds to the potential successes of the future.

What are you passionate about? Start a business in a field/product you really enjoy. This way it doesn't feel like work and you will be willing to devote the needed time and actually look forward to it. Take professional sports as an example. You can have players who lack 'elite talent' but their passion makes them into stars. And then you can have very talented ones whose focus is mostly on the money and never live up to their potential.

First and most important question for me:

Why do you want to start a new business?

How big is your "why" for wanting to start a new business? Is it time freedom (which you probably won't have in the beginning) the money, retirement, prestige, helping yourself...and others, spending more time with family or whatever the reason is. The biggest decision you will ever make is just starting...not getting ready to start but actually doing it.

My first questions:

How much money do I intend to make per month?
This determines the necessary game-plan to avoid missing the mark. Someone wanted to add an extra $100 a month in the next 12 months firmly planted in reality. Someone wanting to max out a payplan (with no MLM experience) will be dissapointed if they don't get there in a year.

Do I have 3-5 years to devote to this? These will be three to five long years with people telling me no, friends poking fun at me, others challenging my decision, going some months with little or no profit.

In my opinion, though some products are great and others are ho-hum, you don't need to focus on the product. If it is of good quality and is marketable, then it will suffice. I believe any marketer can max out any compensation plan with the right combination of drive and knowledge.
