"Old" Advertising Success?

Postby Brent Lysander on Tue Sep 13, 2011 3:22 pm

I just started my business and I have gone through my entire warm market with not too much success. I don't want to harass my friends so I figure I'll give them 6 months and then give them all another call.

In the mean time I was thinking of posting a flyer in some local coffee shops with my web address. I know this is "ancient" advertising according to all of you computer buffs - but I'm not very computer savvy.

Just wanted to see if anyone has had success doing any sort of flyer distribution.

Thanks,
Brent

Flyers work. Make sure you target your market with your headline, body copy and call to action. Don't make the message broad. You can always do up another flyer (or several) to target different info and different prospect types.

Target your location too. I know it sounds obvious but if you're targeting seniors don't put your flyer up in a gym.

If you use a website, have a good capture page with an easy call to action and explanation of what they are going to see in the next step.

Great advice Joyce

I have found coffee shop bulletin boards work - the rate of return is slow though.

I pay a few local kids to hand out flyers for me - each one gets 500 and they are unique to each kid. I pay them .25 for each lead that calls/emails me and if the person signs up they get $10 per signup. This has worked very well when you give the kids direction and coaching (where to go, what type of person to look for and how to sell the fact that the person needs to look at the opportunity)

On one round of doing this one of the kids made over $200 in one day - he was happy and so was I.

The nice thing about online advertising is that it takes only seconds to change your ad.

Printed ads cost money to reprint, to try something new.

Biggest thing you need to do is TEST.

Your first ad may bomb, but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

Ask yourself why it may have failed, get an opinion from others about it.

Make the changes you think will work and do it again.

Keep repeating this process until you find something that works.

Most people will quit after the first failed attempt.

Others will quit after the second attempt, and very few will continue after that.

As long as your consistent with your efforts, I can almost guarantee you WILL make money :D

I realize that those "old" advertising methods are outdated and will become costly for a beginner in this business. You have an expense already of making flyers, distribution costs, a small payroll with the hope of getting a lead who would turn into a sale and that would not match your expenses.
I made some flyers up and distributed them on my street. I invited everyone to my house with food to be served and a guest speaker. No one showed up. My plan was to continue distributing flyers to the next street in my neighbor and duplicate my efforts. In the middle of summer, free food, on a weekend with well in advance notice, no one showed up.
May I suggest just start talking to people and listening to them. Have a business card or brochure ready for them to check out. Calling them later may help them to remember their conversation with you. If you can convert into a sale, then "one down and one to go!"
This may be an old advertising method but it is not as costly.
