"Sure I'll help you and it won't cost a thing."
"Call me anytime, I'll personally answer the phone."
"I've got some spare time to help you."
"I understand, I went through the same thing, let me tell you what I did."
Don't those phrases show you are desperately searching for someone to join you in your opportunity?
Doesn't that desperation follow through to the subconscious minds of your prospects?
Aren't you looking for business builders? Ones who have their own initiative, see value in your opportunity, have that spark that can be ignited with a good presentation?
What's getting into the subconscious minds of our prospects? Are they picking up that a business owner does every activity other than selling their products under the guise of building relationships with spammers, blog commenters, and/or phony friendship invites.
Does it matter if we're showing a duplication method that doesn't create the financial freedom everyone is looking for when they joined their MLM?
Bottom line - If you're not selling your MLM, you're not making any significant money. Period. (Affiliate marketers, don't get your panties in a knot, I'm not talking to you)
Does the rest of the "busy work" come across as desperation/fear of sales/lack mentality?

Re: Desperation??
Why can't those who are brand spanking new say those things? Maybe I misunderstood what you posted but I think that the first few quotes are fine for those who genuinely have time to help and are looking to build their presence online or build their brand.
"Call me anytime, I'll personally answer the phone." - I know several top leaders including myself that say this. Not desperate at all. You want help call me. But, I bet I recruit you.
"I've got some spare time to help you." - If I have spare time sure I'll help you but most likely I don't. Maybe a new person might and that could be their winner on their team. You can never judge a person.
"I understand, I went through the same thing, let me tell you what I did." - This is just fine to say. It's REAL.
Just my thoughts on this.....

Hi Michelle. In MLM, if you are not talking to people about your opportunity/products, you are not making money. (Again, affiliate marketers are a different category)
Are we training people to do every other activity but the right ones? Are we then duplicating that mindset throughout the industry? Example: "Sure, I'm free. I'll help you, let's get you busy doing some activity."
We need to teach prospects that we are in business and that business will grow only when they (we) give others the 3rd party tool then get out of the way of the journey. We (they) are here (in a minimum of words) to guide people from one step to the other (using every tool at our disposal), sign them up, then nuture and protect our newborn distributors. That's where relationships are built - after they sign up. Prior to that we are (almost silent) guides.
Yet, we duplicate what? in our online presence. What are we instilling in the subconscious minds of our prospects and/or new distributors?

Hi Adam.
Network marketing is based on performance. I wonder how many people would hire themselves if they took their activities with their results TO themselves and said "hire me, this is what I've achieved."
A good friend of mine told me once that pen and paper will never go out of style. Smart people write things out (in columns). This is what I've done on one side, this is what my results are in the other.
Then look at it. Really look at it.
Are we really network marketers when we play around online? Or are we just busy? And what are we feeding into the subconscious minds of everyone we touch?

Hi Joyce
It be a very small number, as I'm finding out personally when mentoring. Very small. Many are in denial big time until they meet a mentor who strips all the nonsense out.

I gotta agree with Michelle.
I know a lot of top network marketers that say, call me, I answer my own phone or something along those lines. I know they will share their similar struggles with you.

Hi Tracey. The key to building your business is prospecting. When you have scheduled your time (and for some who are working part time it may only be a couple hours a day) answering phones, responding to emails, tapping into social media is busy work that has to be closely monitored.
Those couple of hours needs to be focused on YOUR business - presenting your opp to lots of people - building your team - supporting/encouraging/training YOUR team as they come on board.
Are you seriously IN business if you spend your time answering questions from people not in your MLM? (And yes, I know, you're building relationships in the hope they will ask you what you do and then join you)
That's your plan? Hope people ask you what you do?
The only path to success is exposing people to your opp. That's the key: Exposing people to your opp. That needs to be the plan. Now the question is how do you do that?

No, Joyce, that is not my "plan". I just like to be accessible. I have other ways for prospecting. Would you ask that of Diane Hochman? I know she and other leaders do make themselves successful and still build a large business. Don't assume that this is the only part of anyone's plan.

I hear you Tracey. I've walked that route, got all the scars to prove it.
Nothing I found online actually built my business. I'd get lots of leads, used lots of different affiliate programs (I think Diane calls that a supermarket of products), mentored and coached anyone who asked in the hopes they would ask me what I did, people who would steal time away from my kids but there was always one piece of the puzzle missing.
How do I build my business?
I am in business and I asked myself why I was hiding that behind "I'm going to be your friend, no agenda" culture that was being built online.
I am in business, to make a profit, in my network marketing business, by helping others do the same.
Some will see it, get out of their comfort zone and make residual, passive income IN their network marketing business relatively quickly. Others will be busy making money by creating friendships so they can sell them more stuff.
Which is OK but what is it feeding into the subconscious minds of potential business owners? That it's OK to become a good friend before they ask you what you do? How much time does someone need to schedule into their "plan" before they can claim success in their MLM?
