MLM Newbie... Where Should I Start?

Postby Brett Lindenberg on Sat Aug 04, 2012 9:12 pm

Hi All - My name is Brett. I'd really appreciate feedback of some veteran network marketers on what course of action you would recommend. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

First, I'm a total newbie when it comes to multi-level marketing. I have no idea what to say to potential new distributors and am definitely not a salesman by nature. So there's my weakness.

With that being said, I do have the advantage of being an SEO consultant for about 5 years now and am extremely comfortable building websites fast and have a good understanding of how-to market things online. I will have no problem setting up landing pages, publishing lots of content, etc.

With this super brief background... Is there a particular training program or book or just advice that you would give to someone that needs to beef up his sales / closing skills and is just getting familiar with MLM? Thanks for the help!

Hi Brett,

Welcome to the world of MLM. A couple of questions come to mind - How were you introduced to your current MLM company and Have you talked to your upline who are creating success in your current company on how they have created their income with the company?

One of the best places to start is with your upline.

Appreciation from the Heart,

Richard De Haven

Hi Brett,

Welcome to the wonderful world and profession of NWM.

Coming as a newbie has the advantage of you probably not being tarnished with some of the B.S. that can go on in this industry.

I would recommend reading a really great book for those new to MLM and it is called "Your First Year In Network Marketing" by Mark Yarnell and Rene Reid Yarnell.

If you are currently with a MLM company, share your story of how that company and product(s) has benefited you.

Being that you are an experienced webmaster you have a potential advantage in using the internet to market yourself.

Lastly, I find a lot of great training in MLM at http://www.networkingtimes.com

Welcome to the forum

I would sugest looking around the forum to begin with and ask any questions you might have like you are doing right now.

Look at the signature links and see if there are any specific sites that could help you further.

Look into Magnetic Sponsoring. Mike Dillards products is always great value that any serious networker should study.

Welcome to the industry and welcome to the forum.
The first and foremost thing you should do, when starting at level one, or zero or nothing at all would be...

...to educate yourself. The previous posts already suggested some resources you can study. But before you even try or attempt anything, make sure you do your homework before you attempt a strategy.

And there are times when you'll have to invest some money into this education but it will definitely be worth it. Once you've learned even one little thing, start applying it straight away. Rinse and repeat. Once you keep educating yourself and take action consistently (and failing a few times in the process), you start to build up some value for yourself. Then you eventually gain experience and you will eventually break through.

Find a mentor can also shorten the learning curve, but either way, you will have to get crankin' :)

Good luck!

Hi Brett,

I believe you should start on putting up some positive info in your mind. A lot of people get easily discouraged and then quit with this industry because of rejection and not getting desired results despite the effort. You have to start within yourself. Know your strongest "WHY" you won't be affected by negativity.
Also, find a good mentor. Its very useful to have someone guide you along the way. Be sure to choose a mentor that has gone through brick walls with this industry.

All the best

Pio

Brett,
First of all congratulations on joining the NWM industry. I came from a background in aviation so I really did not have any experience in talking to people over the phone. I basically started like everyone else does in this industry, without a clue! To get over the fear of talking to people I started out by calling leads, but of course this wasn't fun. I never sponsored any of the leads I called but I did get over my fear of dialing. I first started learning how to talk to prospects by getting my hands on as much information on prospecting and talking to prospects. The first audio set I dug into was Tim Sales, Brilliant Communicator. He has some great audio's but it's not for everyone. I also memorized scripts to call my prospects and this definitely helped, because it gives you a road map to your end destination, which is getting your prospect to look at your opportunity. Learn from people who have been in the industry a long time and have had success. There a lot of great trainers out there, you just need to find one that fits your style. But you also want to ask yourself how you want to build your business. Do you want to build it the traditional way or utilize the internet? I can probably guess that you want to use the internet since you have experience already. In that case you want to see what the top earners who use the internet to build their business are doing. The sky is the limit when it comes to using the internet to build your business. I can say that I prefer it over traditional because it saves time and you find more quality people. The best thing you can do is to work on your mindset. Most people fail because they lack the mindset for this industry. Lots of people come into this industry looking for a get rich quick deal, but it takes time and effort. I wish you success in your new venture!

Best Regards,

Hello Brett!
Welcome to Better Networker, I am sure you will find it a great place to hang out and full of great people.
Where one should start is a great question with many correct answers, and the advice on this thread is very good.
Along with a mentor, your "Why", and joining a company that you believe in (it will show to your prospects) I would like to add "Where Not To Start".
DO NOT FALL FOR THE ENDLESS STREAM OF METHODS AVAILABLE TO GET LEADS "FREE" AND "NEVER HAVE TO TALK ON THE PHONE"
Magnetic Sponsoring being the exception! It is affordable, is a great mind set, and will teach you that there is always something more to buy.
Some work and others work great, but the added learning curve and expense of trying this shiny item and then that shiny item takes away from your main company and all of the added information becomes very overwhelming. As well, you have less money to market your company.
Many people come into NWM after being pumped up by their sponsor and/or marketing materials and forget to realize that NWM is a real business and requires real business actions.
So, I would recommend learning as much as possible about your company and the marketing methods/materials they have in place. Become skilled at these whether online or off and add other methods only after mastering the one or two you are currently learning!
However, with a SEO background You could probably incorporate that into your routine early on without a big learning curve or learning expense.
Oh!, and don't forget to pick up the phone. It is usually the fastest and most affordable method of gaining a new sign up.
Take care everyone.
