How many skills do you need to build your MLM?

Postby Joyce Penner on Thu Aug 16, 2012 7:50 am

Talk to people.

Take them to your presentation.

Follow up.

Train.

How many skills do you need to achieve success?

Network marketing was created to be, and is, simple. Didn't say easy but simple.

Are we complicating it?

WOW, this an awesome question Joyce.

I would say it depend on the person. For example if I have to choose between building online or doing home/hotel meetings for me I choose the internet. Life is so much easier online for me; however, being online brings about it's own set of skills required to make it work for you. I think it depends on the person and their comfort zone.

I think in todays market place it's just not that simple anymore because you get tried of cold calling people know I did and if your going to use paid marketing it just make sense to use some type of PPC method and with all the different social networks online today makes it easy to reach out and group a loyal following.

I don't think I would still be in Network Marketing if I hadn't found Internet Marketing because being new with no connections and being an introvert was hard. On the other hand I will say being online comes to with it own set of challenges and skills required such as adcopy, list building, engaging, web basic skills, follow up, PPC Method Vs. Offline Cold calling, Inviting, Home/Hotel Meetings and follow up.

I choose the internet and I offline things such as Hotel meetings and cold calling for now but I don't think it's easier or less complicated then what I do online.

This is a very interesting question it will be nice to see what others think.

Till Next Time,

Willie

Great posts by both!

What do we do? Follow the MLM sales pitches or try to get our own leads by finding them online? Some people are one way, some are the other and then people like me try both.

My friend and I are selling ViSalus. He is SO in to the MLM training and doing what they say. Me on the other hand, I want to do it on the internet and follow Dillards style for long term success. Not shoulder tapping my nieghbors and friends, spamming facebook etc.
I promote ViSalus and Bids For Kids!

Hi Joyce,
Great question, and yes I do think we have a slight tendency to complicate it. We have to remember to stick with the basic's and not get caught up trying to do everything all at once. Build a strong foundation and add to it with more knowlegde and training or whatever comes next for you. Fundamentals, fundamentals and then fundamentals!!! Lol

Hi Joyce

I was one of them, I definately complicated it when I first started out 1 yr ago. It took me months to realise what I was doing wrong. Then it all clicked and I look back now and cant seem to get my head around why did i not think like this a yr ago! but its all good experience and i have learnt alot. i now enjoy spending time on my computer rather than struggling to even switch it on.

I dont think we need skills, we just need the right education! :)

I am not sure if this is a skill or not but I truly believe you only need one thing and that is FOCUS. These days there are so many "shiny objects" online that most people are getting distracted and with distraction comes no action.

With focus, most can learn the simple steps of recruiting is they do not already have the skills to do so and from that duplication will come more easily.

It was created to be simple - but today with all the technology going on - it is not only pick up the phone and talk/train..
It is about how to advertise/ where to advertise/ how to do it in efficient way and much more.
You will need to be friendly, show that you are having fun, show that the opportunity that you are suggesting will be the one for your prospect, you need to know when to push and when to let go, you will have to be persistent, you will have to know how to teach and you will need to know how to learn, listen and think about others like you think about yourself.
In summary - I will say that I will gladly want to be a friend of a successful network marketer - for sure they will be leaders with great qualities.

Awesome replies !

I look at duplication: Which is easier? Teaching a person how to blog, learn SEO, generate leads etc. (which could take years to learn how to be effective)

OR

Keeping it super simple by talking to people and pointing to a presentation?

Simple may not be easier as it means getting out of your comfort zone but it's profitable and that's what we're all here for, isn't it?

I've come full circle on this -- I used to be in the camp of lead generation skills.

Now I firmly believe that PHONE SKILLS are your most important skill set to learn.

If you get good on the phone, you can do very well very quickly.

And as you said, Become a POINTER... point to the resources your company provides to help you (presentations, etc.).

We all have a tendency to overcomplicate stuff, me included. What ever method you are using I say master a skill and then move on to the next. If you try to do it all at once you will be overwhelmed and get nowhere. I just remember the acronym KISS Keep It Simple Stupid.
