O'K, Dave is not the only one on this site that can rant. This is about social networking and using FB. I use mine primarily to socialize with my friends, however I am beginning to notice a new trend.
There are individuals that only share updates of their latest articles and blogs and business updates; they are full of back links. They rarely comment on their other friends posts or have any original updates to share. How is this helping to "build relationships?" I thought that was the purpose of social networking. Am I right? Who is teaching this concept? I am getting annoyed with a few people because of this.
Has anybody else experienced this? Or is it just me?

Re: Who is teaching this????
Well, I thought if I taught everyone else to do that,
I'd be able to slide right in all cool and everything.
Get all the bizniss for mah self.
Whenever I post something here, I hit the Twitter box at the
bottom of the page. From there, Twitter shares it to my
Facebook profile.
While I do comment on other stuff from time to time, the
posts about my new content do show up on my profile, etc.
As soon as I get my fan page set up I'll only post business there.
Or maybe not.
Seems like the prevailing thought is to move all business away
from the personal profile, but we'll have to wait and see how it
pans out.
I wonder if Facebook will start screening the news feed for business
oriented posts and give them less weight, and therefore less exposure.

Re: Who is teaching this????
Yes, there are a number of people who are using Facebook merely as a running advertisement for their op. I'd say they're ignored for the most part. As long as it's in the news feed and not on my wall, I don't mind. Occasionally I'll 'hide' one if their posts are too frequent. As for the other business updates, blog posts, webinar invites, etc, I'm glad they're there. They are contributing valuable content and I have learned quite a few things from some of them. If not for those posts, and the fact I'm marketing myself on facebook, I wouldn't be on there much. I do interact with friends, both old and new, post the occasional life related update, 'share' things of interest which generally relate to business, economy or my 'passion', wellness/nutrition, and post my own marketing and industry related content. I think you need to have a good mix of all of the above. I'm sure my old friends would rather read about what I'm doing and contact me (as quite a few have), than have me call them up after 30 years and try to pitch my opportunity to them. It's possible that some people would 'hide' me from the news feed when I get on my soapbox about nutrition, but in the immortal words of Dr. Seuss, "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

Dave, you are one of those people that I was referring to. We have already built a relationship, so you are forgiven:D Joetta, I agree. I have also hid one persons updates from my newsfeeds because that was all she ever posted. I blocked another person for the same reason. Every note she sent me was pitching her business.) It would be nice if more people used these social networking sites for what they were intended for.
A few months ago I was looking for another company to join. I found that individual on this site and we did start building a relationship. It was his commentary and genuine concern about me when my mom died in May that got me thinking that he really was sincere. (It was one comment he made on my FB note that I shared that got my attention.) I decided to investigate his business further and so far, it has been the best business that I have ever gotten involved with.
People really don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Good to have a balance between value and your real life comings and goings! Automate your backlink building and value bringing and do the rest manually!

Hmmmm...
I guess moving all business off the personal profile is the way
to go then.
Maybe put the business websites in the small box under the pic
on the front page, and elaborate a bit more in the info section?
Would it still be acceptable to post about a seminar or event,
since that might fall under lifestyle and would be OK on the
profile? Talking mostly about the trip, food, hotel instead of what
business you're traveling for?
It seems like this is going to be a fine line.

Re: Who is teaching this????
I don't make the rules on FB, or Social Networking sites Dave. I do check out links periodically under profile pictures just to satisfy my curiosity. I don't see anything wrong with posting events or conference calls for a persons' mlm. Those can be quite informative especially if new products or programs are being introduced. It's a nice way to stay connected. Someone mentioned balance. If all of your posts are about your business or all of your posts are personal, you become a very dull individual. Balance is the key to everything, both personally and professionally. Although lately, for me it is becoming the same thing.
Enjoy your day.

If you post a comment to someones profile and that person can learn from you then the more likely you will be in business together in the long run.

Re: Who is teaching this????
Jim Yaghi posted an email from a friend and what it said relates to what you're talking about.
Does facebook "punish" anyone for building pages that only post links? I don't think I've really seen anything yet but I've hard a few clients say they have a hard time building fan pages and such.
I can relate to the question about social networking being about building relationships. I have a business related twitter account, but I don't like to fill it full of links. Like Dave said, it's set up to share links from here whenever something is posted, but now and then you gotta pop in and let people know you're really there.
But some of my clients neeeever post an actual update (from the heart). I just have a long list of links that I'm afraid to click

Nice to meet you Marianna. I also have been inundated with links like crazy on my twitter account. Occasionally, I meet someone that I can connect with, but they are the exception, not the rule. Tweetdeck is helpful for actually communicating with people on twitter, although it has been awhile since I used it.
I have been thinking about trying to build a fan page for my businesses on FB. I will keep your advice in mind. I might have to back to blogging on Hubpages. That has been the best forum for advertising my business and getting acquainted with like-minded people.
