For really cheap hosting I use Shield Host. ($4 a month) I have a few sites there, but usually not important sites.

I agree with everyone else that Hostgator is great hosting. They are one of the best in the business. I have a bunch of web sites with them. Their price is only slightly more expensive and well worth it.

As far as using a service where you can get a domain from them, make sure you will actually own the domain. Sometimes the web hosting company actually owns the domain (especially if they give you a free domain.) You want to make sure you are the owner of the domain in case you decide to cancel your account and move to another host. You want to be able to take the domain with you.

I use hostgator. They've been pretty good to me. I'm thinking about trying out bluehost.

.

Cheap DOES NOT equal GOOD.
Be careful where you shop. Heck you can even get free hosting, but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

I've been in the online game for over 15 years and I can tell you unequivocally ...
You get what you pay for.

HostGator is excellent.
Just keep in mind that even then, the inexpensive plans come with their share of issues.

When it really counts and you need superior performance, quality, stability and security
I highly recommend a dedicated server. These are gonna start around $149 per month and run as high as $400 or more for enterprise level solutions.

I've been using HostGator for years and they're one of the best I've used. And I've used a lot of hosting providers, over 12 in 15 years. But as my business increases in size and exposure and I rely on uptime and security to serve my customers and clients it's becoming time to get away from shared hosting and move to a dedicated solution. I ran a dedicated server for years through Aplus.net but scaled back when we changed business models.

What's shared hosting?
This is basically every single hosting package out there that's sold for under $100 per month.
All the $9.95 packages you see - that's shared hosting.Reseller accounts? ... shared hosting.
And all it is, is that you are "sharing" an IP cluster on a server somewhere. So your sites are on a server along with about 20-30 other sites. Think of it like "website condos," you have a unit within a larger complex.

The bad thing here is that you may not know who else lives in your building and how they are affecting the "reputation" of your neighborhood.

here's a tool you can use to see who's on your server or shared IP address:
http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/web-s ... eb-server/

So anyway my whole point here is very basic:
This is your business we're talking about ... Be Smart - Not Cheap!
