How do you use/read Blogs?

Postby Dotty Scott on Sat Jan 03, 2009 10:48 pm

What do you do when you get to a Blog?
This is a question form a consumers point of view. I would like to know -
Do you read the whole post?
If you only read part of the post - how far down do you read before quitting?
Do you like images in posts?
What will entice you to click on something other than the post (links in sidebars)
Do you ever look at the Archives?
Do you ever go through the Category Links?
Do you ever click on Advertisments in Blogs?
What is the average length that you like for reading posts?

If you have any other insights about how you use a blog (as a consumer - not a marketer) then please add your insight.

the blog needs to catch my eye first and foremost whether it is the title or the look of the content. The blog then needs to have good content, if it is just a bunch of fluff (useless stuff only meant to take up space on a page) then it won't matter if I read it or not I won't get anything out of it.

This is a very very very vague question and I think what you are trying to get at is what is most important in a blog... That would hands down be the quality of the content over anything else

I know content is king...I am trying to get at how people read a blog. I am assuming that people will be posting great content - I would like to have input on the above questions so people can use the information when creating their posts. I see many people that do not get the best benefit from thier blogs and they need to be thinking about how they can improve. The input here should give many ideas about how people can post more effectivly.

I understand what you are trying to get out of this post so here goes.
Remember that these questions are incredibly vague and will vary from user to user significantly.

-I usually skim an article/blog unless something really catches my eye or if a friend had directed me there.
-It's not a matter of where I stop reading, rather if the post is being skimmed over I will get from it as much as I want. This is why it is important to use headings, sub headings and to really organize your article so that even those who skim over it will still get your main point. Nothing forces a reader to stop reading/not read the whole post like a disorganized and jumbled article.

As for clicking stuff in the post that all depends. Sometimes I click stuff just for the hell of it and sometimes I am doing other things online and won't glance at all at any ads, I'll just get what I want from the article and leave.

Average time reading? All depends on how long the article is and how interested I am

Hope this helps
Do you read the whole post?]

I do if the heading gets me and then it starts off like a story. Love blogs with stories which teaches what many don't but with a flowing story. I don't find many anymore like these. But if it gets me on the headliner, then the story, I read on.

If you only read part of the post - how far down do you read before quitting?
Do you like images in posts?

Sometimes I do read some post only part of it because there's no picture sometimes. I like images in a post, and subheadings. If subheadings hit me, then I kind of reading on but most of time I don't because there either no subheading to get me down and also it kind of started off dry, no hook to it.

What will entice you to click on something other than the post (links in sidebars)

Something that has an image, a little neat small headliner that says something about my needs. Or an icon that's funny. Or it be like those google friends list with photos and might want to be part of it.

Sometimes though, it's those funny heading instead of free video or free ebook, or "course" etc, it has like a crazy image, and a funny quote or heading, then it says click now. Then I laugh and say, "Ok, let's check this out then.

Something orginal.
Do you ever look at the Archives?

Yes I do when it is easily visible. I like the ones where I can see all the post on the right hand side, with the titles. It's easy for me to see what it is there and then. I do understand though that sometimes someone being blogging for long time, so they have archive place to check all of them. Or they'll have like months or year, so I click on them to see what they did.

If it's visible, not somewhere really small, then yes, I'll click on archive. Sometimes, not straight away but if I feel this blogger, or site is cool, got awesome content and first one gets me, I like to see more of what they do.

Do you ever go through the Category Links?

Sometimes. If it's all about one issue, they got their branding right, then yeah but it's lots of catogories, well, I don't sometimes. Maybe if it was like on networking, or mlm, or even stuff on techy kind of thing which I am into. So yeah, I do but only if I am sure of the first content I see anyway and think, I got to see what else this person does, so if it is all great, I'll bookmark it or even share with others, or put it in my face book.

Do you ever click on Advertisments in Blogs?

To be honest, yes and no. I say this because I go to blogs and they got loads of adverts, loads of different courses and so, I see too many choices, boxes. I look at them, stare a bit and say, "hmmm, no."

Now, if there was only let's say one or two boxes, then yeah but sometimes, you get these blogs and there's loads of them about 5 or 10 and just move my eyes away.

What is the average length that you like for reading posts?

If it's really well written, about a few minutes. Let's say 5 mins. If it is well laid out, on top as well, 10 mins. If it's average, and saying same as other mlm bloggers, about a couple of minutes.

I like the blog article to be kind of short, not too long.
If you have any other insights about how you use a blog (as a consumer - not a marketer) then please add your insight.

One thing that bugs me. Is you leave a comment and the blogger never replies to the comments. Many are great but some don't reply, engage with audience.

Also, they kind of strangers, no photo, or a way I get to know them, see their human beings, not just photos only of themselves but, something were we can touch base with the blogger once in a while. Sometimes, you can only if you bought a product, or on their list. Wish they had their own social network where all fans can step up.

Or they ask audience to send in an article so we can get involved kind of thing. Something were people can get involved or the blogger writes something about a raving fan of there's every month. You know, like a give back, rewarding the audience.

I know, it can be a much but be cool to have that.

I will usually scan headline and read post excerpt. If the blog
content is of interest to me then I will subscribe to the blog
from my browser.

Then I may go back and read post's throughly ;)

Hey Dottie a great forum post, As you know I am in MArketing, but b/c I have 2 eyes, that makes me a consumer too! So with my "people" hat on, I have to say I like them short and sweet, Like the little old lady in the commercial said "Where's the Beef!" Time is so crucial these days, just the facts is what I believe most people want, A pic is worth 1000, words so I am for that! and A short Video 10-30 seconds is even better.!! I know YOU KNOW how to imbed Video's, and one of these days I am Hoping you can teach this OLD DOG, those new tricks of yours!! But just a great post!
IN short, its called a BLOG, not an essay or a novel!!

Good questions Dotty.

For me...speaking from my consumer side...I have only 5 blogs that I follow on a semi-daily basis. I spend about 30 minutes a week investigating blogs of other people who've I've come across during the week.

I only follow or investigate blogs of people I want to learn from - in other words, something happened that that person got in front of me with their knowledge and I said, Oooh, I want to follow what they do and read as much of that person's content as possible.

And yes, these people can write, often weaving in story with facts...I like a story to reign in the facts, personally. I rarely skim, I am a reader. This is how I pick up the good stuff rather than browse around pointlessly looking for an arrow that points to treasure.

Anything from 450-900 words is good broken up with headings and subheadings, additional video, links or any pics always help readability and purpose of the content.
