Facebook Add Friend

Postby Tony Coulson on Mon Nov 21, 2011 11:48 am

Facebook is getting heavy with me when I try to add a friend. Can someone tell me what this is all about?

I am not a big user of Facebook however I just went in to add a few friends and I was told that I must know them before I can add them. I guess this is a privacy thing however how can I build relationships when they
block me. Help

Hi Tony

Yes Facebook is getting pretty tough on this now as they are getting lots of spammers on there.
You have probably received this message from sending a similar message to a number of people within a short space of time. Even more so if you are a new user to Facebook.

I advise my team members to try and send about 15 friend requests in their target niche a day. BUT.... only in groups of 5 requests at a time and each time with a different message.

If you do it slowly and “uniquely” you should have no problem. If the problem persists, then slow it right back to just a couple a day and slowly build up – I think the problem is because you are a fairly new user to FB and they are suspicious of anyone adding lots of friends early on.

Hope that helps.

I haven't seen that warning, so it is news to me, but it makes sense from Nicky's explanation. Great advice as well! Thanks for sharing, Nicky! :)

When adding a friend, facebook asks do you know that person. If you do, they would accept your friend request. Sometimes it is even better to have someone else recommend someone to you. A lot of people have gotten to know me very well on this site. I am getting plenty of friend requests from others recommending them and new people requesting to be friends. I am keeping busy keeping up with all the new friends. Somewhere everybody you befriends knows somebody that you both know. Friends who have friends are recommending their friends to you. No one is a stranger when everybody knows you from someone else.
A lot of the people that are one my friends' list, I have never met. But I know them through other people and from our working relationships in common. Over time you friends' list will grow as people get to know you and let them know what you do now and can help them as well.

One big question, why do you want to add friends who you don't know? Do you have anything in common?
Just arbitrarily adding friends to your list would send up red flags for me too.
If you want to meet new people go to a match dating site. There are plenty of them waiting to meet you. Facebook is about meeting friends near and far who share something in common. Most of my friends are relatives and past co-workers. Many of them I have never worked with during my career. Since I am in a new business, I let my friends know what I do now. My friends recommends their friends to me and we all become associated in friendship at a local level. Now everybody knows everybody because we are all friends.

Mario
Anyone who is serious about building a business is using Facebook to build a list of potential customers for their product or service and whilst I believe your profile wall should be kept social, it should have subtle (not spammy!) links for people to check you out on your fan page. (For example, where FB asks you to put your place of work, why send this to an empty page? - Make use of that page link and take it to your fan page where it lands on a free offer page).

By seeking out new friendships as Tony is trying to do (through groups, interests and any of the other search criteria) you are building a "friends" base of people in your targeted niche. So as long as you do this carefully and are not spamming the heck out of these people then he is doing this the right way.

You may well meet people through others, but when you are first starting out on facebook, finding targeted niche "friendships" is the way to go.

Hi Tony,
fb is a social networking site, they want you to
stay on the site longer, so if you are posting links
and requests to people within moderation they
will support you.
However as Nicky said do it more subtly and
slowly by putting things of valuet in your posts.
Join groups that are relevant to your interests and
answer questions .
Also fill in all your information on your profile
fb will then start to refer poeple to you in your interest
categories.
All the best Brian. :D
