How are your money emotions affecting you?
I can just see some people’s eyes rolling now. What “Money Emotions”?
e·mo·tion
n.
1. A mental state that arises spontaneously rather than through conscious effort and is often accompanied by physiological changes; a feeling: the emotions of joy, sorrow, reverence, hate, and love.
So as you can see by definition, an emotion is something that we attach feelings into. These feelings have a range of very good or positive (happiness & love) to very bad or negative (anger & fear.) Your thoughts have a great deal to do with how you are feeling. AND your thoughts can control how you are feeling. How you are thinking about money gives life to your money emotions.
There are many different ways we develop money emotions. Sometimes our past experiences shape our feelings towards money, or maybe we’ve been listening to others opinions on money and it has influenced us. Either way, we have some underlying emotions tied to how we live, spend, earn & save it.
It’s time to take an emotional assessment of our money emotions. Everything we do with money has some degree of risk involved. This is where our emotions come into play. When we feel a risk some may see it as an exciting challenge to overcome (positive) or others may just want to preserve or play it safe out of fear of loss (negative.) Since we are creature of habit, we tend to always do what we’ve always done.
This may or may not be serving us.
If you find yourself constantly worrying, struggling, depressed about your money situation you are very unlikely to see way to improve because you are stuck in a fear based emotion. You’ll find yourself making excuse after excuse about why you can’t do something different. I can’t afford it, I’m not very good with money, I don’t know how, etc.
Where do you really think that all the “I can’t’s” are coming from? Deep down your fear of the unknown, disguised as failure keeps you shackled to you self serving poverty.
In order to have a positive money emotion you must learn to shift your “I can’t’s” into “I cans.” To develop this skill you must detach yourself from the outcome. You let things play out without fret, worry, or critique. Most often people make bad decisions based on fear. They act too hastily without thinking in the long term. Learn now to become a little more ambivalent. Not about decision making, but towards the effect. The more relaxed you are about the process, the easier decision making will be, and your ability to remain objective.
Think positively about money. Let go of all those miserly money doesn’t grow on trees sort of thoughts. Yes it is wise to invest, Yes it is wise to live within your means. Money is just a form of paper we exchange for goods or services. So whether we are receiving it or spending it, it’s still just paper. Don’t let yourself get emotional about it.
I am just as happy paying my debts as I am getting paid. WHY?? Because I know that one is a necessity of the other. Why would I only be happy about 1 part of the process? Don’t like paying bills? Get happy about having the money to pay them. Everything is just an exchange.
Sometimes we lose, but we also have the same ability to profit. If you take the time to clear away your negative money emotions and you will see untold opportunities.
