What do you think of Wordpress.com -vs- Wordpress.org?
Group: Better Networker Newbies GuideHello Everyone,
I'm considering moving to Wordpress.org. I'd love to get your feedback on why this might be a good move? Wordpress.com is free (which is wonderful when starting out, like I am), but I've heard it's good to have your own domain name. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Wordpress
Hi Kathy,
It's best to host your own blog/website. This way you own it. Using free blogs/websites can mean that the owners of the platform can take your stuff down. If you own it, only you can take your content down.
I hope this helps.
wordpress.org is the only way to go if you are serious
Friend of mine lost her whole blog when .com shut her down. The only thing she can think of was she had lots of spam comments coming in (which unfortunately happens when you get a lot of traffic to your site). Needless to say she's moved to .org and her content/blog is safe.
Bit of a learning curve though.
To your success,

The problem is their TOS ...
Wordpress.com has very stringent TOS which their membership rigidly adheres to and will report you for violating.
Basically, they don't want anyone doing anything that they might profit from on there. No links to sites you might make money from, not linking strictly for the sake of better ranking in Google, no ads or sales convo of any kind.
If you have to have a free blog - Blogger will work. But Joyce is 100% correct - if you're building a business you want to own the real estate you invest your content time and energy on.
Period.
Andrea
Thanks
I appreciate the information about Wordpress. I have a blog on .com and didn't even know what .org was. Now I have enough info to make a better decision.

I didn't know there was a difference either
I am looking to start a blog and have already purchased a domain name, but it was my understanding that you could link it to you wordpress.com account with out any problems.
Jamila Wordpress but you need to host it yourself
Yes you can Jamila but wordpress.com owns it and has control over it. Its be to host your own blog with the wordpress 3.0. Same platform but your hosting it yourself. My recommendation for hosting is Host Gator. You download the files from wordpress.org or most hosting sites like Host gator and Go daddy hae it built in to their back office. Hope this helps TTYS :-)
WordPress.org is better than WordPress.com
We have personal experience getting kicked off of WordPress.com after they determined we were using our site for marketing purposes (which apparently is quite easy to do given their numerous rules). This was after spending lots of time building up the site. Very disappointing.
You can skip a step and go straight to WordPress.org. It doesn't cost much to get your own domain name and server on WordPress.org (~$35.00), but luckily with a little tech support we were able to transfer most of our first site's content, so it wasn't a total loss. Then we spent lots of time poking around with all the different plugins (which is worth the price of admission itself). We also played around with the assorted page templates (all of this without knowing HTML). Our site turned out mighty slick.
