I remember it  clearly like it was yesterday…  It's 1978 and right next to our house, there's a "munanda"  A place where we took the cows every Monday to be sprayed with Insecticide or whatever the heck that was.

Sitting on top of one of those wooden pillars. (which seemed so high to a 10 yrs old), I would  look over the horizon at night and there was this one red light that shone from miles away. It was right in the center of Nairobi.. the capital city of Kenya and to a 10 yr old village boy with no shoes on his feet, getting to live or work in "Nairobi" was the biggest dream you could ever dream… and f**k did I dream.

I wanted it. In the village, electricity was something we heard about but had never seen. Indoor plumbing?? Gosh, what could that be?

So, on my shoeless feet I would walk to the "munanda" every evening to gaze at the single red light that emanated from the place I dreamed of someday working and living. I'll spare you the next 20 yrs and get to the point.

20 yrs later. I was not working or living in Nairobi.. oh no, I had done better. I had a supervisory position in a big company right in the snowy, slushy, "windchilled" land of 10,000 lakes .. a.k.a  Minne-Snow_ta and I had a medal for  "outstanding book of the year award" hanging on my wall.

Now to an American native, that's not close to impressive but to the 10 yrs old shoeless boy in a remote Kenyan village where 99.99% of the people never ever left the village.. that was like living in Mars. A major accomplishment indeed.

But that's only the beginning of the story. 10 yrs later, Minne-snow-ta was behind me and so was the job.. for good.. forever, never again to ever ever have a boss. Las Vegas was my new home (what can I say, I got a thing for never ending sunny hot days) wonder why.

Looking back, I see exactly how I got to not only achieve my wildest dreams but surpass them in leaps and bounds.. in ways I never could have imagined.

Today, I live a life that 99.9999999% of everyone who grew up with me or went to school with me cannot even touch. And not to brag but it's not because I was smarter or cuter or whatever. The only thing I did better than the 99.999999% of my peers was to DREAM way way way bigger than they allowed themselves to.

When I'm coaching a client from Australia or the UK or Canada or wherever, I get this urger to pinch myself and make sure that I haven't been stuck in a 12 yrs long dream that I can't wake up from.

When I realize that I'm fully awake. I feel grateful. I feel grateful for the opportunities I've been afforded but mostly, I feel proud that I allowed myself to dream big when there really was no precedence or need to. I could have settled like the rest but I didn't. (not sure what or whom to thank for that)

Which brings me to my point. You can't have what you don't believe you can and you can't get what  you don't believe you deserve. And guess what. It doesn't have to be realistic or logical. You just believe and let the universe take care of the rest. I did and it worked miracles for me.

If you want something, no matter how impossible it might seem right now, don't hesitate to dream. Not every dream will come true but then if you don't dream at all and realize all your non-dreams, what have you really got?

I would rather dream big and achieve "some" of it than not dream and achieve all of it.

To dreaming big !!.

Dream Big

Thanks for sharing that Anthony but more importantly for bringing us back to the realization that in order to achieve our goals we first have to set them..... and what better way to set them than to dream big dreams!!

thanks
Adrian

Out Of Africa

Thanks Anthony for your story. Now I don't feel alone. I grew up in South Africa during the rough years in the 70's. I remember even being a teen and TV was not available. I was so fortunate to come to the USA and get to experience live the dream. I every day look back and say to myself how lucky am I.

You got to believe
Mark
