Note: If you are not a person of faith, this blog does not apply. My intention is not to sound churchy, but to address critical perceptions to a group of people I relate to…W.
What I’m about to share deals with the relationship between business and faith. I am a pastor in the Midwest who also is an entrepreneur. Recently, I had some people contact me asking if I was no longer in ministry because my updates on Twitter and Facebook seem to deal with business mindsets. I asked one what a Christian mindset would be and they said, “to rest and trust God”.
I agree with that statement, however, it depends on how you define trusting God. My concern is most Christians I know define rest and trusting God as a passive position where we do nothing and hope God shows up to our rescue. If that were true, Gideon would have never defeated the Midianites, David wouldn’t have defeated Goliath and the Philistines, John the Baptist would have never confronted Herod, and Paul would have never escaped Damascus.
I believe rest and trust are active. The reason my quotes sound like a “business mindset” is because I see no line dividing what is true in life, faith, or business. What works in your spiritual life is the same thing that will work in your business life. There is no “secular” or “Sacred”…there is only truth. And we can define truth in a later conversation.
As a pastor, I am tired of hearing about the financial problems people have and only offering a “be warmed and filled” prayer. The people we love need solutions. (Don’t get me wrong, I do not take advantage of my role as a pastor to profit in my business sphere…there is a way to do business with integrity).
I am tired of leaving the spiritual truths we know in a conceptual state. We need to apply the truths we know to be solid in practical ways that can help people in every day situations.
People may view my quotes as a “business mindset” only because they have divorced their spiritual life from what they do on an every day basis. I have seen more “Kingdom life” in bars, business events, hardware stores, and grocery stores, than I normally do on Sunday mornings. It’s time we get out of our four walls and make our faith impact the people around us in every day life, and business. What we do here is essential, honorable and working very well.
