Promote Two Way Communication
It goes back to the community building.
You must be involved in a two way communication. It is not a one way shouting match.
You have to let people know you are a real person.
Two way communication is another way to build trust. If some one posts some really good content, and they are part of your community, it behoves you to go in and say, "That was a valuable post."
Try to add to the conversation they have started. You've just gained a new fan in that person. They know you're listening to what they have to say. At some point they will know you and give you their "mind share".
So the next time you submit content, they'll fulfill an obligation to bookmark it, share it, comment on it... Returning the favour. It's the law of reciprocation.
Not everyone will return such favours but there is a percentage that always does. It is a numbers game, plain and simple.
As an example, newsvine.com, will specifically reward your account for the interaction you have. So it's not simply the comments you provide to other posts, but they even keep track of when people reply to your comments. So they're actually giving you a sort of "quality weight", based on your two way interaction.
As you do that, they also become more lenient in allowing you to include self-serving links in articles you post on their site. If you just sign up for newsvine.com and start spamming it with links that go back to your site, they'll ban you pretty quickly. But if you have a high quality ranking, they'll allow you do it.
It's an attractive way of rewarding and recognizing interaction. Newsvine reward that two way communication because they realize the fact that without it, the network will die.
So the more two way interaction and the more participation in the network, the bigger the network grows. They reward members for that because that's another step in building community.
An essential thing you must understand in community building is your access to two way communication. The only way you can build a long-term, sustainable business using social media is to never forget the real purpose... two way communication.
