John Akers

Hello, my name is John Akers. I am currently serving in the United States Air Force. It has been my job for the past 16 years and I look forward to retiring in January 2016 and starting a new journey with the story that is my life. Here is a quick bio of my life.
I dropped out of high school senior year since I was absent way beyond the point that Saturday make up days could cure. The path set before me was to become a manager at a local fast food place or complete my high school equivalence at the local community college and join the military. Obviously I received my diploma and joined the Air Force and never regretted my choice.
I’ve been to Korea a couple times (1 year tours), spent 4 months in Al Udeid in 2003 during “Operation Iraq Freedom”, and a weekend in Spain when we could not land in Turkey and we were redirected back home. The majority of my time in the service has been spent at Seymour Johnson AFB, home of the 4th Fighter Wing. It has been a great 16 years and there is nothing I regret.
During my military service my wife has brought three crazy, hyperactive, lovable children into our life. I can’t imagine my life without them and I would prefer not to. I’ve had a good life for the short 35 years I’ve been upon this earth.
In 4 years I will be retiring from the military and currently taking college classes. I look at my mountain of debt and realize that I will probably have to work for another 20 years at least after military life. I will get retirement pay but it will only cover my current mortgage. I am looking at some self-employment avenues to generate money in something I am passionate about and will let me enjoy the last 30 or so years I have left on this earth. Let’s face it, no one ever got rich making money for someone else. I don’t even want to be rich, just comfortable and worry free. That is where I’m at in this stage of my life.
