I first entered the network marketing industry about 30 years ago, marketing a “purchasing club card”, the lifespan of this company was short-lived as it was shut down by the authorities. Recruited affair sized team over about 6 months – we all lost money! 

A couple of years later I became a part-time marketer for a company called “Study Methods International”. I sold memory & study methods development programs to parents & students. I learned techniques on memory development – I could memorise 100 numbers inserted at random into a grid 5 columns wide & 20 rows long, in 5 minutes…& then recall the exact position of each number for an indefinite period, until I memorized the next grid. As I was employed in the Banking industry at the time & had received comprehensive training in sales, marketing, customer relations & telephone techniques, amongst others, I was appointed as one of the regional trainers for this company, spending most Saturdays giving lectures to up to 100 people at a time in hotel auditoriums. I did this for about a year & made some good money from it.

Joined Herbalife in 1993 when it was in a fairly strong growth phase. Learned all the “old-school” methods of recruiting & network marketing. At that time, we were exploring & using effectively, the mail-order method of recruiting. Internet methods were unheard of. I contacted every single one of my friends, family & neighbors resulting in some of them alienating me. Some either joined and quit or didn't want me to mention it. I did the house meetings, hired-hall meetings, all the weekly training meetings and more. I bought all the expensive products & used them, in the process learning about health & wellness. I was consistent and persistent. I came early and stayed late. I edified my up-line, read all the books and gave motivational talks to the newcomers. I basically did absolutely everything that my up-line told me it took to succeed. I found some customers who bought product from me. I personally sponsored over 20 people in 6 months & my downline grew to almost 80 over the next two years - the problem was there was absolutely no duplication. Very few of the people in my group was willing to do what I was doing. It had become a very time consuming, pocket-money paying hobby. At best, I made enough to almost cover the cost of my products I was purchasing every month. Seemed like a futile exercise, so I quit! You may well ask why it took me so long to quit? Simple really…I had a big dream, brought on & stimulated by the promises of great wealth my sponsor & upline were continually reminding me of! I really believed that if did what I was supposed to do for long enough, it would all “kick in” & all my dreams would come true. Wow, was I wrong…

I took a break from network marketing until about 1999, when I was introduced to Skybiz International. Ran with that until…well, we all know what happened to them.

Then Amway made an appearance in my life. I was grateful to be introduced to a company with real products that could be used in every household every day. This held value for me! So I jumped into that, repeating almost everything I had done with Herbalife. I trained new distributors every week, presented business presentations & brought people into my business, once again building a downline of about 80 people within about a year. Yet again, it became apparent that only myself & a few others were prepared to do the work, while the majority sat back & waited to get paid. Something about the industry didn’t quite fit…but I just could not figure it out. Once again, made just enough to cover my product purchases every month. So, despite my firm belief in the power of the network marketing business model, I slowly withdrew from it all. Yet today, my wife still uses some of the products that she gets from a friend of ours.
 
Despite unfortunate experiences with a few other come & go companies, I remained positive about my future in network marketing. The fact that this product distribution model has been endorsed by Robert Kiyosaki & Donald Trump is proof positive that it is a successful business model. I knew that the right company with the right products, the right compensation plan & the right training in modern business-building methods would be presented to me. And it was!
 
In the meantime, while waiting for my opportunity, I kept myself very busy with self development - reading over 110 books related to sales, marketing, personal development, success, finances and mindset. I have attended seminars over the years and learned from speakers on every topic ranging from the network marketing industry, small business development & self improvement.
 
I have also taught myself the intricasies of my computer, the internet & online marketing, having successfully “dabbled” in affiliate marketing for almost the 10 years. I also created & successfully marketed my own eBook through Clickbank.        

Over the years, I worked myself up through the ranks in the banking industry, to eventually become a new business manager – asset based finance, with a major banking group. I also qualified myself as a real estate agent by attending night classes. This career I successfully ran with for about three years after leaving the bank. I then managed an electrical wholesaling company for a very astute businessman, leaving that to start my own electrical wholesaler about 6 years ago. In the last six years this business has grown to the point where I now employ six staff, have a business balance sheet with a nett value making it a multi-million dollar turnover business, own the premises we are based in & a personal wealth well above the average.
 
While building this business, I have not kept abreast of the developments in the network marketing industry, putting it plainly – I was just too busy the first 4 or 5 years! Now that I have trained staff to leverage off, my time has been freed up & I am able to now return to the industry that I firmly believe will enable me to retire a happy man in a few short years.
 
I have been fortunate to be introduced to a company that I can really align myself with! It offers everything that I need to take my network marketing business to the level I know it can fly at. I believe that I set an honest example of hard work, discipline, communication skills, training, industry knowledge, marketing knowledge, and diligent support. However, people's success is up to them. I give them the tools and what support I can, but day in and day out they are the ones that must take action to get the results they desire.
