How An Overworked Corporate Professional Found Her Way Into Network Marketing

Hi there!  My name is Shirley Muhammad. I’m a wife and a mother of two beautiful teenage daughters.  I love to travel, read books and hang out with my family.  I’m just a regular person who had a big desire to work from home and be my own boss. Basically, I wanted to own my life. A“What if" is what kicked off my network marketing journey.

My Corporate Beginnings

My background is similar to a lot of people, maybe even yours. I did what my folks told me to. I went to college, got a business degree and headed for the glorious (I least I thought it was back then) world of corporate America. I took pride in my work, paid my dues and got promoted fairly quickly. The problem was that I worked about 50-60 hours a week, supervised other employees who didn’t want to be there and had little time or energy to spend time with my family or do any of the things that I loved to do. I was burnt out and all of the other areas of my life started to suffer.

Although I made good money, my time really wasn’t my own at all.  I had a boss and an electric rooster a.k.a. alarm clock.

My First Leap from Wage Earner to 1099 Status

So I decided to be my own boss and started a real estate business in 2004 with my husband, Darrell. He was the Realtor and I was the Loan Officer. I’m sure you can remember how great the real estate market was back then. We had so much fun, helped a lot of people and made a lot of money.

As our boss, we set our own schedule, traveled when we wanted to, included our children in the business and it seemed like our income had no limits….or so we thought. You see, when you’re self-employed, your income depends on just what you can do. So if you don’t go to work or close a deal, then you don’t make any money. There is a lot of pressure there and sometimes it really sucked!!

Network Marketing Enters My Life

In late 2006, the real estate market started to become very volatile. It seemed impossible to get anything closed and our income decreased dramatically. We were living on our savings and we knew that we needed to do something fast. Around that same time, we were reintroduced to the idea of home business by a friend. We thought we knew all there was to know about network marketing and had even started with a company about 12 years prior but nothing really came of it.

Due to our previous experience, I was skeptical about home based business and didn’t want to get involved in something that was a scam. How could I know who to trust? I did some research on the recommended company (even googled the CEO's name) and found a great company that was a good fit for me.

In December 2004, My husband and I said, “What if” and we leaped into our network marketing career and have never looked back. Along the way, I have learned a lot about people, this industry but most importantly, I have learned so much about myself. 

I am a believer in the power of this industry and I am proud to say that I am a Professional Network Marketer.
