About Me
I was born and raised in Chicago and lived here all my life! My past work experience is in warehouses ... driving fork lifts, shipping and receiving and other related duties. I also drove a Freight Truck for awhile. 6 years ago, I became homeless
for the first time and had to sleep in an emergency overnight shelter. I turned 54 last June and here is my story.
In June of 2004, just after my birthday, I lost my job. I was able to collect Unemployment Insurance. That's when I started
my online efforts to work for myself. I joined a few programs, bought leads and used all the free advertising I could find
(mostly traffic exchanges and safe lists). My efforts to find another JOB had failed and my time ran out very quickly.
At the beginning of 2005, the Unemployment had ended. I was unable to pay my bills and rent was past due. I became homeless. My family & friends pulled some tough love on me and said NO when I asked to stay with them. They were
tired of constantly helping me out. I blame no one but myself and I suffered the consequences.
I had been in and out of jobs and relationships most of my life. I never married or had any children. I suffer from major depression and I dealt with that by using drugs and alcohol. I never listened to my family or friends to seek out some
help. So, by not helping me again, they did. I love them all for that and I hold no grudges or ill will.
It turned out to be the best thing they could have done for me.
The first month was the roughest. I found places to get free meals and I became clean and sober.
That was the easy part ..... No job ..... No money ..... No drugs ..... No alcohol ..... No choice ......
I continued my efforts online by going to the library. I was able to get 2 hours of Internet access a day.
I did a lotta free marketing and learned very gradually from my mistakes.
I was surprised that most homeless people are not very forthcoming with information on where to get meals, where to
find shelter and other things. As time passed, I realized why that was. A good meal and a good bed were very hard to
come by. When you find one, keep your mouth shut or it becomes very crowded and harder to get. Sad, but true.
I carried around my clothes and stuff in a suitcase on wheels. My daily routine started at 6am when I left the shelter.
I walked a few miles for a free breakfast and then to the library to hang out there until 2pm. I walked back to the shelter
to sign up for a bed that night. Then I walked another 2 miles for my dinner and later, 2 miles back to the shelter by 8pm.
Lights out at 9:30pm, up at 5am and out the door by 6am. No homeless people aloud inside this place during the day.
This Shelter was actually a big warehouse with 130 beds for men and 30 beds for women. It was full every single night.
I did this for a full year! Days/Weeks/Months had gone by. My depression increased as my hope decreased.
The new year had arrived and the winter weather was rough. Then something truly amazing happened!
One morning, about 5am, I was sleeping on the public train. I was late and I didn't get into the shelter that night. The train stopped at the end of the line (O'Hare Airport). We had to get off! I wandered into the Airport and found an Outreach Center. They gave me some hot soup, a sandwich and coffee. I sat down with one of the social workers there and told him my story. A couple of hours later, he gave me a referral to get into a transitional facility and train fare to get there. I headed over there immediately. I took a mandatory drug test, passed and was admitted that night. This was January of 2006.
This facility provided me with a bed, 3 meals a day and access to a doctor. It was a permanent residence with a 10pm curfew. I felt so relieved and hope had come back into my life. My work assignment was washing dishes in the kitchen.
When they found out I had a valid Drivers License and a clean driving record, I was assigned to Transportation. It was my responsibility to transport children to and from day care facilities. I also drove Shelter Staff Members to and from meetings and other appointments. I made a lot of new friends there and I stay in contact with them.
I was referred to a Psychiatrist to help me with my Depression. There was training in job search, resume and interview
skills. I attended classes for Anger Management, Thought Control and much more. I had group sessions with other residents, daily recovery meetings and a whole lotta love and respect from everyone there.
There were computers available to work on resumes and job searches. Bus fare was available to go to job interviews.
I just could not believe the turn around my life had taken. I had no idea that places like this transitional shelter existed
and I Thank God every day that they do. I would have to say, it was the best experience of my life!
With their assistance, I was able to get a job as a Security Officer in July, 2006. Four months later, at the beginning of November, I was able to rent my own room at an associated facility.
WOW! A new beginning and new hope for my future. That was the best I felt in a very long time! I learned not to take things for granted. Homeless is No Privacy, No Bathroom, No Shower, No Stove, No Microwave, No Refrigerator, No Bed, No TV, No Computer and other things that are taken for granted by most people. Being homeless was a life changing experience!
I Now realize that everything, good or bad, happens for a reason! I am a direct product of the good and bad experiences of my past. It took all the experiences I have ever experienced to make me as experienced as I am today. I am not proud of
all the experiences I have had in my life, but it took all of them to make me what I am today.
I worked a regular schedule every week between noon and midnight. If I wasn't working, I was on my computer.
My assignment was a Borders Book Store. It wasn't a bad location. I had a lot worse. To my surprise, I met a lot
of people from all over the world. It seems that bookstores are a favorite stop for a lot of tourists. Who knew.
I mostly stood at the main entrance and greeted customers as they entered. I kept my eyes open for shoplifters
and I took an occasional walk around the store. This was my new life. I maintained my attitude of gratitude and
gave thanks that I had a job. But, I was bored out of my scull and I dealt with the pain in my legs every night.
Was this what I wanna keep doing? Of course not! No way! My plan was to make money online and I continued learning.
I became homeless a second time in November 2009 when I lost my job as a Security Officer. Now I did learn from the first time and I had some savings to fall back on. That Money ran out very quickly and I found myself on the streets for another year. My depression took hold of me again and my health deteriorated. Now I'm on full Disability with Social Security Benefits and I gotta new place to live in November 2010. I was back on course and in hot pursuit of my dream again.
