The Metamorphosis of Dean Wong

Well now, where should I begin?

I was born in Kingston Jamaica, the only male child of five children for my Mother. I am the second to last.

I do not know and have never seen my Father, (I'm over that now). My Mum died when I was about nine - ten years old. We were basically on our own, and I was pretty much raised by my Sister Marlene, she was second in line and the only one going to high school at the time. Being so young it did'nt occur to me that I was poor because I think I was a happy child, my Mother had taught me to be content with what I had. Hence I never really gave it much thought.

I started Primary School and I do remember seeing my Sister Marlene cry sometimes for (whatever reason I could not tell, but she cried).

I only found out when I graduated from High School that she was crying because she did not have the money to send myself and my younger Sister to school, while she was still going to school. So mostly on Fridays or whenever, she would stay home so that myself and my younger Sister could go to school that day.

We got some help from a few family members and also some of my Mother's close friends, but for the most part we fended for ourselves.

I started High School (Saint Catherine High) and things became more difficult. I could not purchase the books and other materials and as a result of that I became very self concious, My very first geometry set was a gift from my 7th grade Maths Teacher who realized that I did not have one. I grew up with a very low self esteem, and only spoke generally with other students in my class and a few others, but I was very shy, especially around girls, boy was I a dork. You have no Idea how far I have come.

So I graduated from High School in 1984 with not the best grades and let me say, I was clueless as to my future. This shy kid with his poor background ready to take on the world, "yeah right".

By the Grace of God and through a friend of my Sister from Church I got a job as a Legal Clerk, I did this for about 5 years and all throughout my time I was this aimless kid, just working from paycheque to paycheque, no direction, no plans no clue.

I became bored with the job and then I got another break to start working in the construction industry as a Draughtsman. I have always liked to draw, my Mother taught me and as a child it was my joy to draw all the Super Hero characters and bask in my triumph when they were completed.

So I became a Draughtsman and within two years I had started to learn CAD (Computer Aided Drawing).

Over the next fifteen years I remained in the industry where I rose to the position of Senior Computer Aided Draughtsman. During this time it really hit me that my life was going nowhere if I did not make some fundamental changes in my life, so I started going back to school part-time. I enrolled myself into the University of Technology. My years of experience in the building industry afforded my this opportunity, and I held on to it and made use of it.

After years of much struggle and disappointments, I finally graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Engineering and Management, (it's enough to make my head spin when I look back on the journey).

I have a lot to be thankful for and I am so greatful for the many good things that have happened to me. I have a beautiful family and a renewed zeal to excell even more.

I now live in my own home in Saint Catherine on the outskirts of Spanish Town, which was formally the Capital of Jamaica and it is my desire to become financially independent in the next five years.

Over the last year of my life I have discovered the concept of personal development. I have read most of "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and other great literature that has helped to impact my life and has given me a resounding hope that things will get better and I have a brighter future. I have met and continue to meet great human beings who are helping to renew my mind and strengthen my resolve to be the leader and mentor to many, that I know I can become, and was made to be.

And yes I believe in God, in His Son Jesus Christ who came, lived among us, was crucified, rose on the third day and ascended to heaven where he is now The King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords.

If you don't believe in him that's fine, I'm not preaching to anyone. But it is he who has given us the innate ability to become all that we can become, to do and have everything we truly desire. We can do all things through him who strengthens us.

I feel so empowered, so blessed and I am so grateful for what he has done in my life so far. My coast is being enlarged and my abundant future awaits me.
