Wordpress claims a *5 minute install* in their literature and videos. Bull-crap.
Oh, I know, the installation part really is that fast, but there is so much more to a self-hosted blog than just the Wordpress software install. You have to buy a domain, get hosting, create a MySQL database, download Wordpress, extract it, upload it to your domain, install the software, then update settings and add a theme.

Blogs do bring lots of prospects. I see it as the center piece of all my marketing efforts. This is how I build trust and start the relationship. Most of the time people will try to contact me after reading on my blog. Even if they haven't heard about my company, they're ready to do business with me because they see I know how to build a successful business.
Instead of initiating the contact and chasing everybody, you'll attract your target market by using a blog and search engines love blogs.
It's not only cost effective to have a blog but it multiplies your marketing on a much larger scale.
