I have to agree with you... I experienced the same thing!

I noticed the same thing. I had made a post that within a few hours was in the front of the search engines for my keyword.

This is it: http://www.betternetworker.com/opportunities/view/mlm/must-see-make-mone...

Google picked it up so quickly!

This wasn't always the case

So true jessica,

However, I've been a member of the community for while now, and this hasn't always been the case.....its the first time I've seen a piece of content on here jump onto page #1 without any link building.

Cool stuff for all of use who post good content on here.

Yes You Did -

Better Networker is a good "Google Friendly site, and your story is accurate.

Kurt, Great video.

I know of a classified Ad blog that gets me similar results.

Kind of neat getting Google Love, just for being you.

I Like to check peoples results, because some folks never know to check their Google Search setting options.

By default Google will cookie all your searches - forever...lol

So if you never change those settings and do Postings and searches, you could find yourself on the first page... a lot.

Thanks for sharing,
Tim

Better Networker

Tim,

You are absolutely right about that one. I used to get fooled in the past alot with that one.

Yes, Better Networker is a very google friendly site, and has gotten much more so IMO in the recent past.

The term itself I was targeting was somewhat low in terms of search volume and competition, but was still suprised when I saw it.

It's always good to get some easy google love :)

Is top ranking an illusion?

I too, have gotten overnight top page ranking using long tail key words for articles and videos I've created. Heck, I even had a couple videos and articles on the same page with over 400mm in the "results" number in the upper right.

It's a nice feeling -- sort of.
As I basked in the warm fuzzy glow of top ranking, I suddenly realized I wasn't getting any leads!

Week after week, I went: Top Ranking, even #1 position on pages with well over 1 millions in the "results" number for an article and lower ranking at 5 & 6 for a couple of videos!

What's going on I wondered? NO LEADS! Dang!

I started getting paranoid that my website and blog sucked. I reached out to the CCP forum for answers and honest critiques.

I am grateful that a real pro stepped up to provide me with a reality check. I call him my Super Highly Analytical SEO Coach (SHASC).

Here's the deal:
The so called "gurus" have misled you into thinking top ranking is the end all of marketing.

If all you do is search your long tail key word, you may very well find your self on top with a very high results number well over 1 million. It's easy to manipulate the key words to get there.
BUT...
That does not in ANY WAY equate into actual page views or clicks. It's possible no one will ever pay attention to your link!

TIP: The results number is not how many people are looking for you, it's the actual number of competing pages.

It was pointed out to me, when searching our long tale key word to put the phrase within quotation marks like this:
"my super long tail key word" vs
-- my super long tail key word --
The actual results number drops considerably and more closely reflects reality.

In this case of Tim Henderson's long tail key word
'Free network marketing leads' he does indeed at this writing show up at position #5 on page with 2.6mm results to other pages.

BUT, if you do this: "free network marketing leads" this according to my new Anal Coach, the results drops to less than a few thousand and Tim, is actually off the map!

Now, I'm not here to rain on Tim's or anyone elses parade because I too, was living under a similar false assumption until my Super Highly Analytical Coach gave me a reality check.

But, my Anal coach pointed out that the "results" number doesn't mean squat if no one is really going to my page!

There's more to it -- much more!
You need to find out how many actual page views these key words have.

It's not uncommon to find first page listings with little or no ranking or the all important page views.

The take away is:
It' easy to manipulate your key words, especially long tail key words to get top ranking on even a high number "results" page.
But, I have learned

Top ranking don't mean squat until you create enough back links to your blog or website to create real traffic, page views and clicks.

Well, I have gone on too long here. Key an eye out for an article I am creating as we speak, so to speak.

Search Engines

I apologize for not posting and getting with my Group, and it is due a lot to me being busy doing a lot on my own training and learning about my computer and schooling my self to be a "Better Networker" so I am glad that I am hear and really think that you have to do your "Home Work" and to be helpful to other's by learning. Trial and error but you have to take what all the friends you have made on BN's advice also. Any time I respond and give my, for what is worth on BN I always see it on the search engines and that really adds to all the other projects that I get involved with as a funnel to my activities. Great Discussion

Reading this thread, there is some great wisdom regarding google rankings. I have studied this for some time and there are many fctors determining where you are found. I would suggest going to google webmaster tools. You can register your domains there and get stats on what keywords rank where in google. This is averaged out across the whole network so it gives you an idea of how well youa are doing. Part of the report is the % of people doing searches on the term that see your page. I think this is very important. combine it with the google keyword tool which gives you an estimation of searches and you can get an idea of what is happening. As for what to do to get there, I am still putting the final touches on my training on how to do this.

Thanks Sean @ betternetworker.com

Yes, it works pretty well, but its just an overall part of any kind of content syndication and linking strategy.

Kurt Henninger — Sat, 02/27/2010 - 11:36am

You are right John

John, you are dead on here, there are many many factors that go into rankings in google.

This case in point was just one example that I found for a website that I feel is getting more authority in search engines.

Better Networker, Indeed An Authority Site

Thanks for sharing Kurt, this is exciting stuff looks like I need to start posting more articles here.

Glad you mentioned the voting feature here at BetterNetworker it goes to show if you post valuable stuff people will vote it up which creates a social buzz which Google recognizes and also helps to keep your articles in the top listings.

Better Networker voting feature

Kevin,

Good point about the voting feature. Not exactly sure how that relates to more visibility in the search engines, but I do know that the facebook and twitter helps create "social buzz" which equates to more visitors, which generates more buzz, which generates better search engines rankings through link sharing on social media marketing sites.

First Page

I love better networker and the things people post. It is always very exciting to get first page on Google. I stumbled onto a way about 3 years ago simply by accident and have been regularly getting on the first page sometimes within minutes! I get a good steady amount of leads very easily as well. It's great to see so many having success playing Googles game. I wish everyone true and long term success. Success meaning not just getting first page but getting leads from that first page that result in sales! Rock on!

It's Not Brain Surgery Once You Know What You're Doing

When I first started, I had no idea how to get ranked on google. But after playing around and being successful at adwords and seo, it really isn't that hard to get ranked for a particular keyword.
