How to create and install a blog header for free

Read More: Blogging

Here are a few of the resources you'll need that I used in this video

- Jingproject Software (FREE)

- Flexibilty Theme (FREE)

- Thesis Theme (PAID)

This video shows how to install the blog header on either the thesis theme or the flexibility theme.  Thesis is a little bit easier and a better theme for a lot of reasons.  That being said, I used Flexibility theme for the first 8 months I was a blogger.  Either will work just fine.  I just like to offer options.

I'm assuming that if you're watching this video that you already have your own self-hosted wordpress blog set up, however I want to make sure that if you don't you get the direction you need to set up a self-hosted wordpress blog from scratch.

I love JING

I love Jing, and I use it constantly to create Facebook Ads and banner ads, and now I see how I can help my team use it for their blogger heading (cuz not everyone uses Illustrator!)

Thanks Jordan.

This is Awesome Jordan

I never thought of using Power Point for my graphics. I usually use Photoshop, but Power Point is so much easier, and it comes with all the cool lettering!!! What a great tip. I recently just started using Jing and I love it. Haven't been able to figure out how to quite size it from the top like you did in this video. I'll have to hit you up on Skype sometime about that! :) Great tutorial! Staci

Anytime Staci

You let me know what you need, and I'll show you how to do it. Jing is awesome... and i've even learned a few new tricks in the past month or so.

Awesome Value

Hi Jordan,

Great video. Thanks for sharing this. This is indeed a great alternative because most headers cost from 60-65USD. Thanks again.

Sonny Lanorias — Sun, 11/07/2010 - 10:18pm

Thanks Jordan

Neat tip. I've been looking for a way to do just that without paying to have one designed. Thanks.

Glad to save you money. This video came to me after a few students of mine asked me to show them how to put together a blog header... so I've put up a page on my blog for anyone to ask me questions, and If i have an answer, i'll create a video.

Terrific Video

Hi Jordan,
I love the Thesis Theme for all the reasons you mentioned, but seeing you walk us through how to use PowerPoint to make a custom header image was my big take-away. Thanks for putting this video together and teaching people the value of customizing blog headers. Makes a big difference in the long run for personal branding and business development!

Great Nuggets Jordan...

Those were some great tricks on creating a custom header. Never thought about Power Point as the medium for putting it all together. Paint.net is a great photo program to tweek things, and it is free as is Jing - one of my favorite programs.

I am in the process of setting up my Blog right now, went to Adobe Photoshop and registered for their Free 30 day trial. Found that to be another really easy way to creatively put a header together. Hint: Watch some YouTube vid's on how to create b/c Photoshop uses Layers. Easy once you figure it out. But, avoid the frustration and give yourself some prep time b/c the program is so powerful.

Would be interested in knowing what else you have learned from Jing also in the past month.

Thanks for putting that all together.

BTW - Flexibility theme. I just went to get it, the free version - Flexibility 2. I could not find it. I downloaded Flexibility 3 and in order to get all the controls and more that were available in the free v.2, you have to upgrade to the $127 pkg which gives you an incredible amount of control over your blog. Thought I would pass that along as I saw you had Version 2. I searched all over for that and everything just kept leading me to Version 3. Thanks Again! Great Job!

Dennis Olsen — Mon, 11/08/2010 - 11:32pm

Thank you

Thanks for sharing a most excellent video. Haven't heard of flexibility. May have to check that one out.

Brad Pollina — Mon, 11/08/2010 - 11:58pm

Great tips Dennis

Dennis,

Thanks for all the tips. I've just setup photoshop on my computer, and am totally lost as to how to use it. started watching some brief tutorials today, but haven't gotten to the layers yet. Thanks for the tip.

I haven't actually used flexibility in 6 months or more. just wnated to make the tutorial for my previous students. good to know.

Hey Jordan,

Thanks for the great video. I tried this out with the Thesis theme, and it worked great. All along, I wasn't sure how I could get the header done.

Thanks to your video, I have everything sorted now.

You made my day better...THANKS!

Hi Jordan,

In the process of moving my blog from a free to a paid platform (FLEXX), I knew a new header was needed. Your video came along at the right time. I guess when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Thanks for the tips.
