How To Install the Google Plus One Button On Your WordPress Blog
In this video I will show you how to add the Google +1 Button to your WordPress blog and into the Sharebar plugin (if you have it installed.)
How To Install the Google Plus One Button
On Your WordPress Blog
The buzz has been going around about Google getting into the Social media arena with their own “like” button just like Facebook. I am not going into the details here about “what is Google Plus One” as you can read about it in more detail in my previous post “What is Google +1 and Can It Help You Gain An Unfair Advantage Over Your Competition?”
Let me just say this…
Word of mouth is VERY powerful! How often have you acted on a recommendation from your friends? How many movies have you watched because a friend recommended it? How many new restaurants have you tried out because someone told you that the food there is really delicious?
You see where I’m going here?
We usually do act on a recommendation from a friend versus and advertising on TV or in a magazine. Right?
This is where Google Plus 1 comes in.
The developers at Google had the brilliant idea to create a button to let people vote on specific content that they like and would recommend to their friends. The more votes a particular piece of content gets, the higher it climbs up in the search engines.
Pretty simple concept, isn’t it?
So, how do you add the Google +1 Button onto your
WordPress blog so people can give their
vote of approval to your content?
It’s actually quite easy. Just watch this short tutorial video above or follow the simple steps below…
Step 1: Visit the Google Developer Website here:
http://www.google.com/webmasters/+1/button/index.html
Step 2: Decide on the look and size of the button you would like.
Step 3: Login to your WordPress Dashboard and navigate to “Appearance >>> Editor.” Look for “Header (header.php)” in the right-hand menu under “Templates”. Grab the first part of the code and put it into the header.php just before the </head> closing tag.
Step 4: Go back and grab the second part of the code and place it wherever you would like the button to appear. For example, if you want the your Google Plus One Button to appear right below your post title, then place it in your Single Post (single.php) file just beneath the title tag.
(WARNING: Whenever you mess with code, be sure to make a copy before making any changes. So just in case you make a mistake you still have the original code.)
Voilà, you’re done!
Now, I placed my Google +1 Button in my Sharebar. (You can see it to the left.) In order to do that, first of course you would have to have the Sharebar plugin installed. Then you just go to the settings of this plugin and “add a new button.”
Here’s how you do this:
Step 1: Navigate to “Settings” on your WP dashboard and find “Sharebar.”
Step 2: When you click on it a window will open where you can “Add a New Button.”
Step 3: Give your button a name (Google +1 would be a good one, hint) and the position you want it to appear on your Sharebar.
Then grab the code for the “Big Button” and put it on top and do the same with the “Small Button” below.
Don’t forget to click “Enabled?” and “Add Button.”
Voilà, you’re done! You have just added the Google Plus One Button to your blog. Quite simple, isn’t it? Trust me, if I can do it, you can do it.
Now your visitors can give you a +1 to show that they liked your content. By the way, this is a hint =)
