How To Add a Twitter Follow Button to Your Website

Add Twitter Follow ButtonIntroducing the new Twitter follow button! Previously, adding a button to “follow us on Twitter” on your website took your users away from your site to your Twitter account where they could manually click to follow you.  This was seen by some to not be a good thing considering you really don’t want to give your traffic a reason to leave your site.

I suppose if you make sure that by clicking the former button your users were taken to Twitter in a new window or tab, it really isn’t as bad.  However, both points are now moot with Twitter’s launch of their new “Follow” button.

The new Twitter follow button allows users to “follow” an individual or company directly from the website without leaving.  Users will still be able to view the Twitter profile from the site by clicking on the user name next to the follow button.

Today, in this video I’m going to show you how to easily add a Twitter follow button to your website or blog with a few simple steps.  Screen shots are below if you’d prefer to not watch the video.

Go to Twitter and log in.  Click on “profile” at the top of the page and once at your profile, click on “about” shown below:

Add Twitter Follow Button Step 1

Or you can simply type the url seen below into your address bar.  On the next page, click on “Resources.”

Add Twitter Follow Button Step 2

On the next page, click on the image of the “Follow” button seen below:

Add Twitter Follow Button Step 3

On the next page you’ll be able to make a few customization decisions and you’re code will automatically generate.

If you are already logged in to your Twitter account, your user name will already be filled in for No. 1.  You most likely won’t be able to see a preview of your button like you see below.  I’ve already created mine and installed it on my website, so the preview you see below is Twitter actually grabbing mine from my website and displaying it here.

Add Twitter Follow Button Step 4

Once you have finished creating your Twitter follow button, all you need to do is grab your code, head over to your website and paste it where ever you would like it to appear.

And there you have it.  We have successfully added a Twitter follow button to our website.
