I feel what you are saying here (too many chiefs not enough indians)
I think that you are right the product has to be legit and the comp plan has to be worth the time, I feel that what happens many times is that we find good products with a crappy comp plan or good comp plans with a crappy product. Sometimes we find a good product with a good comp plan but with no support for the field.
I personally do use these capture pages that you talk about and these guru systems that are out there but what I do that may be different is that I became an affiliate of a program that teaches others regardless of their program how to drive traffic to their capture pages and how to convert that traffic into sales. That has been the difference for me. As we all have heard before "Service to many leads to greatness"
